That's one thing I like about our local paper's online edition (I know you're talking Facebook, so it's not quite the same): with particularly sensitive stories, they don't use the comments feature. My first instinct is actually that this is wrong, that if they're going to have comments, they should have them whether it's a story about a tax increase, a Vikings' loss, or a murder. But then I think about things like you mentioned, and other idiotic comments I see, and think, nah, it's best to leave them off. Current example: there's a horrible story today about a teenage party in rural, far-western Minnesota (on the South Dakota border) that went very wrong. Kids around ages 14-16 were hanging out, drinking. Two got into a fight. One stabbed the other in the chest, and the victim died. This happened in a town of 535 people. Can you imagine if comments were turned on? You KNOW it would be like those kds shared, people blaming the deceased kid's parents, people going overboard villainizing the killer's parents or family, etc. There would be idiots in Minneapolis chiming in on how that's "Trump country" morality, or some such thing. There would be rural people saying that's how things are under Gov. Walz's administration. And on and on. People can be pretty awful. So despite my instincts, in situations like that, I like the comments off. I think that's actually a good idea in some cases, especially sensitive issues.

Today is my Friday, the last day before a long weekend away. I could not be more anxious to get through it, and especially finishing off that meeting that never materialized yesterday with corporate. (It's now this morning, in about half an hour.) This might be tempting fate, but it looks like a pretty smooth day after that. Then I can start planning and packing and have an enjoyable Friday evening ... on a Thursday.

...and especially finishing off that meeting that never materialized yesterday with corporate. (It's now this morning, in about half an hour.) In many ways, this could not be more predictable. The meeting that was half-assedly scheduled for yesterday (but never confirmed and never actually scheduled) was then scheduled for this morning. So I joined the Google Meet call/meeting a few minutes early and waited. And waited. And waited. I--the only person there--left after about 13 or 14 minutes, thinking that was more than generous already. Then I got an email from the organizer, the corporate VP guy, that he had to reschedule us for tomorrow. At this point, I'm not bending over backward to be flexible for him, so I told him I can't do it tomorrow or Monday (vacation) or Tuesday (already scheduled leadership meeting with my company). So if he wants to meet, it has to be later than that. Or, he could just email whatever questions he has for me. Let's be serious, considering the time difference between India and here, that seems like the easiest solution anyway. I hate these vague initiatives, "we'll discuss it on the call," etc. Tell me what you want, and I'll respond appropriately. Enough of the nonsense, especially if he's the type to be unable to keep a schedule and have to keep pushing things out. I'm practically counting down the hours until I log off now.

I think, since remote work has become the norm, higher ups are more likely these days to expect people to just log in whenever they need them, regardless of whether the person's on vacation or sick or whatever. I think that's a load of crap, personally. Your time is your time.

Vacation is here. And I somehow put off packing to the point that I'm a little behind. I need to get to it. Have a good weekend, all.

I went and renewed my driver's license in person yesterday.
Wow, the MVA has come a long way. Back in 2006, it took me about three and a half hours to renew in person. Yesterday, I don't think I was in the building for three and a half minutes. I made an appointment online. I got an email just prior to the appointment, and checked in using my phone. When I checked in, I was given a number. Within seconds, my number was called. Quick eye test and picture. Updated some information, confirmed the rest. Done.

While it wasn't quite that fast (being a late Saturday morning, after all), we were there about 30-40 minutes. We weirdly can't schedule appointments, but can sign in online to get a spot in "line." If we timed it better, it probably would have been closer to a five minute wait. I'm starting to do research on how to basically restart the lawn in the back half of my yard. We spent close to two years on and off clearing the land of honeysuckle and other nuisance trees and such. The downside of taking so long is that all of the formerly mostly bare ground is now fully covered in weeds. Mostly with what I think is Bermuda grass or something similar. It's apparently really hard to get rid of, so I've been browsing reddit for advice. There's of course a page for lawncare. I suppose it's just like any other sort of hobby, but it's crazy how into it these guys get and how much money they apparently spend. It's all pretty overwhelming on the options I could take.

Today was one of those rare days I left work elated. There's a lot of "hurry up and wait" in my role as a middle manager.
So, I have a fiscal year end report due each year on the last business day of August. To submit the report, I need to get some information from another agency. And, they're in a different building, so its not like I can stroll over and say "hey, you got that thing I need?"
Despite my asking for a few weeks, I still didn't have what I needed when I walked in today. I'd been stressing about this all week because my plan for tomorrow is to work remotely and log off at noon to get ready for our Labor Day trip to Ocean City. So, I really wanted to submit today since there are often issues with the website on which the report is submitted, and my laptop sometimes struggles with the site. So, I prefer the better connection at work. Plus, the data entry is far easier with my office's two monitor set up.
Finally, mercifully, I received the information I needed just after 2:30pm. It took a bit to add the information and navigate through the usual issues, but I got it submitted at 5pm.
I instantly felt a huge weight lift. Now, I feel like I can enjoy the weekend.

That's great news for you, kds.
And somehow I completely missed that this is Labor Day weekend! Must have been that I was focused on my little vacation last weekend and so I just overlooked it.

That's great news for you, kds. And somehow I completely missed that this is Labor Day weekend! Must have been that I was focused on my little vacation last weekend and so I just overlooked it. We actually used to avoid the beach during the summer holiday weekends, fearing the big crowds. But, ten years ago, my family talked my girlfriend (now wife) and I into coming town. And, the crowds really were not terrible. So, we've been doing it ever since. Coincidentally, that first Labor Day Trip coincided with my first year at my job. I remember I got my report submitted that Friday morning. And, my boss said "Did you submit the report?" I said, "yes, about a half hour ago." She said, "Why are you still here? It's Labor Day Weekend, go home." I took her up on that offer, went home, and watched a movie as I waited for my future wife to come home.

What a drag it is getting old...
Had an appointment with my rheumatologist, and after several tests and x-rays, he recommended a left hip replacement. I've spoken with him about that possibility over the last two years, but for the most part I've been able to do all the physical...things...that I wanted. The problem now is the pain. It affects the way I walk, sit, and even sleep. Again, the frustrating thing is that I can still do things like my job, yard work, and even my early morning walking program. It's after doing those things that I feel it. I don't bounce back like I used to. I already take an arthritis medication (Meloxicam) and I don't want to get into the painkiller thing. I'm curious if anybody has a friend or relative that had hip replacement surgery? I've done my homework but I still like to hear from people who've had it.

Ugh, sorry to hear it. I don't know re hip replacement, but my dad had both knees replaced within the past year. However, he's also older (80) and had both at once, so I'm not sure the experience would be relevant enough to even compare.

Thanks, kds and kapitan. Yeah, I have two sisters who had knee replacements (one had both knees done) but no hips. I do have an old high school football teammate (and a Beach Boys' fan ) who had a hip replacement and he swears by it; no problems at all. Through my job I've come in contact with another guy who recently had it done. He's still in the recovery phase but he's encouraging me to have it done ASAP. I've heard/read that the technology has improved tremendously. In most cases you can go home the next day! The pain is almost minimal. The two guys I mentioned didn't even take the prescribed pain medication. You then have to undergo a couple weeks of physical therapy. I don't know how much work I'd miss but I have a lot of PTO accumulated.
This is the problem...with a nut like me anyway. Even though most of the procedures are successful, there are some things you can no longer do - and that bothers me. Even though the doctor told me about some of the things, you really won't know until you have the surgery. Like, you won't be able to run - walking but no running (not that I run away). You have to be careful the way you bend or cross your legs (or not). See, things like that. And it feels different. I guess it's an ego thing, too. I've always been happy with the body I was born with. It served me well in sports over the years and just in living day to day. I don't want to mess with anything and get some foreign (plastic?) part inserted in its place. I don't know if that makes sense. Gee, the things we talk about on The Beach Boys Today! forum.
