I find New Year's Day a little depressing, too. In my younger days, that is because I was often recovering from a wild night. But now it's more that I generally return to work on Jan. 2 (depending on the calendar), my first day back in the office after a week or so off. It's ironic in that the holiday is supposed to celebrate a beginning, but based on where it falls in our holiday season, it feels more like a conclusion. That's how I view it too.

We did not have a white Christmas, but we might have a white New Year. It snowed about an inch overnight, and while it looks like tomorrow will get above freeing, today probably won't. So New Year's Eve at least should remain white.
I do need to venture out for a new phone charger, but otherwise plan to stay in the cozy confines of home.

Today is the big battle for the AFC's #1 seed between the Dolphins and Ravens in Baltimore. We were so certain that the NFL would flex it to a late afternoon or night game that we sold the tickets to not have to deal with NYE traffic in Downtown Baltimore.
Welp, the NFL decided not to flex any of today's games. And..the weather is as good as one could hope for on Dec 31, sunny and 49.
Its just as well, I suppose. Even had we kept the tickets, for a 1pm game, its often a seven hour commitment when dealing with traffic and such.

Unless we count today's low-key day off--fiddling with my 2023 year-end playlist and doing some laundry rate among the more exciting tasks--my Christmas season more or less ended with an even more mellow than usual New Year's Eve. Generally I'd at least have some cocktails and delicious-though-naughty food, but with my recent little health "excitement," I was shockingly dull! Not a drop, not a puff, no gooey cheese dips or greasy meats or anything. I did actually see in the new year, though, talking with a great friend who's going through some work challenges. (What a thing for her to have on her mind on NYE. Made me feel pretty fortunate.)
By the way, on Wednesday, I already saw one Christmas tree out on the street to be taken away. I don't think I've ever seen a tree down and out for removal that quickly after Christmas! But I suppose they'll be dragged out starting today. I wonder how quickly the lights will come down: we had some Halloween yard decorations up right until those same houses exchanged them for Christmas decorations in late November. So maybe there will be some Santas and lights through Valentine's Day.
Edit - Oh yeah, I almost forgot: HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE! I hope your 2023 was a good one, and I hope your 2024 is better still.

Happy New Year.
I spent the bulk of New Year's Day taking down Christmas stuff. Funny how much bigger the living room looks.
But, the mildly depressing, yet necessary, task is over.
