The album on which The Beach Boys perfected their vocal sound also has the most instrumentals on a BB album.

The album on which The Beach Boys perfected their vocal sound also has the most instrumentals on a BB album. Another album review missing a follow-up post (until now)... For some reason (the cover? the time of year/day I first heard it?) it has a nocturnal feel to it, like Smiley Smile. And the "sea of instrumentals" sees Carl and David perfecting their "guitar machine". The music on the album is pulling in two directions, surf songs and songs about surfing. The latter would prevail. In a way, the beginning and end of an era. "Lana" is often written off as a fragment. It sounds pretty complete to me:

On a beautiful, hot summer weekend day such as today, this album is absolute perfection! It's sunny, youthful, energetic, and immediate. The sound of the guitars, the playing, the band...and, of course, the vocals...it all works and it all works equally. Just spent about 2 hours putzing around the garage and the yard, enjoying the weather, and really digging this album on repeat. I'm not putting down the instrumentals today, no sir! There aren't any talk tracks here or out-of-place themes or sounds. It just works. It fits the day. Surf's up!
