I certainly understand the changing of the name, but I think The Guardians is a terrible name for a pro sports team.

I certainly understand the changing of the name, but I think The Guardians is a terrible name for a pro sports team. I have to agree. It feels somewhat lazy, considering they get to keep the "..dians" part of their jersey. On a local sports talk station, I heard somebody suggest Cleveland Rockers, since the team plays a baseball's throw away from (The Museum That Calls Itself) The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I think that was a pretty cool idea. I also liked the idea of reviving the old Spiders name, but perhaps they wanted to avoid being associated with the worst team in MLB history - The 1899 Spiders who posted a 20-134 record, a staggering winning percentage of .130.

Not a great name, but a lot of local fans seem to like it and it has some local history with the guardians of transportation. I think we would would question a lot of our favorite teams names if they were chosen today. I have to say though, when I hear the name, I think of forms where a parent/guardian has to sign or someone who takes care of an elderly person more than anything else.

I think you're definitely right about that part I bolded: people like the names generally because they're the names of their favorite teams. Always have been, etc.
When I hear Guardians, I think of people on the defensive, though. People trying not to be overtaken, trying not to lose. A good nickname for a bunch of goalies, but I don't know about teams in general. But really, if Clevelanders like it, so be it. Not my team!

I know we had a bit of a transition period in Baltimore when the Ravens were established in 1996, even though I thought it was a cool name dating back to when it was in consideration for our NFL expansion bid in the early 1990s (they went with Baltimore Bombers). Granted, the Baltimore Colts were a little before my time, with their departure when I was three, but they were still very ingrained in sports culture in Baltimore when I was growing up. A quarter century into a pretty nice brief history, they seem as Baltimore as the Orioles (for history's sake, a Baltimore Orioles pro baseball team has existed in one form or another since 1882).
I just hope nobody gets the bright idea to use CGI to change the uniforms in Major League to read "Guardians."

I’m not sure I had ever seen (or took notice of) those statues. Pretty cool. I think it’s a fine name. Seems they got it about as right as you can. Better than a lot of sports names out there, IMO. I’m a little surprised that most of you think it’s a rather poor name. That said, it’ll take a while before it feels familiar, understandably.

I had some time last night and watched a few of the sports' TV talk shows. I admit to not knowing anything about...Cleveland...before this story, but this is what is being discussed. They actually took the name Guardians from those statues that most Clevelanders could care less about or think they're gaudy. The statues really don't bring any emotion into the new name. Statues? Also, who the heck cares if the new name ends in "dians"? Is THAT supposed to make the name change less painful or easier to adapt to? The fact that they kept "dians"? Ha ha ha.
I continue to be amazed how supposedly intelligent people - especially in pro sports - can gather in a room for lengthy periods of time, and come up with some of the most questionable decisions.

Is that a fact? I imagine it depends on who you ask. TCK had apparently heard that many locals liked it. Also, who the heck cares if the new name ends in "dians"? Is THAT supposed to make the name change less painful or easier to adapt to? The fact that they kept "dians"? Ha ha ha. Subconsciously, it could. I continue to be amazed how supposedly intelligent people - especially in pro sports - can gather in a room for lengthy periods of time, and come up with some of the most questionable decisions. I read that they asked tens of thousands of fans and consider over a thousand names. I appreciate that it wasn't just a few "supposedly intelligent" people deciding on their own without any attempt to tie the name to the city itself and its culture in anyway. No offense, SJS, but it just sounds like you don't like the name. But, based on what? Other than it somehow not seeming like a "sports" name - which I'm not sure I even know what that means. Are sports teams only supposed to be named after animals or something?

But, I don't have a horse in this race. I'm just making conversation. I really don't care.
Polls might've been taken, but I heard that a small "committee" made the decision. No, names don't have to necessarily be animals. Hey, it could've been worse. They could've chosen The Spiders (naming a team after an arachnid ).

I don't have a horse in the race either, and I'm just making conversation, too. I just don't get why you (or anyone) would say it's stupid. Or even why you'd distinguish a "pro" team from other teams in deciding if it's a stupid name or not. I appreciate that you simply don't like it. I'm not trying to change your mind. I don't really care either about the Indians. Polls might've been taken, but I heard that a small "committee" made the decision. No, names don't have to necessarily be animals. Hey, it could've been worse. They could've chosen The Spiders (naming a team after an arachnid ). Funny, KDS mentioned liking that idea! To me, that's kind of the epitome of a meaningless name on its face and why I think something like the Guardians is a better choice. BUT, I really do appreciate using a name tied to the baseball history of the city. That said, not many Spider fans walking around these days.

I really like having strong local connections to team nicknames. To me, it helps keep some semblance of regionalism, which I think is sorely lacking in our era. Imagine a century ago when microcultures meant even communities tended to have pretty unique identities. Now, we all watch the same streaming services, know the same LA- and NY-based celebrities, hear the same music, eat the same brands of foods shipped in from all over the world.
Even little things like locally appropriate nicknames can help retain individuality--at least a little bit. If Guardians has that kind of appeal to Clevelanders, great. (Ditto Spiders, for that matter.)

Well, I guess it could get me in trouble with the politically correct world we live in, but a Guardian doesn't sound or appear to be competitive enough, or aggressive enough - not that it HAS to be. Guardian seems to me to be more passive than aggressive, like more protecting than attacking. Yes, I know about youth sports and college sports and even a part of pro sports, with sportsmanship and the lessons we can take from sports. And, I believe in that. But, it's still the competition which drives sports.
If they went with The Spiders, can you imagine what the logo would look like? Yuck! But, hey, it's 2021, soon to be 2022. Maybe they could've gone with The Spyders.

I mentioned Spiders because its a historic name. Personally, I hate the damn things.
That's why Washington went with the Nationals. I believe the Rangers retained the rights to the Senators name, so when DC re-entered the league, they went way way back to their baseball past.
