I suspect a lot of the "genius" angle will be "Brian Wilson reclaiming his 1960s masterworks - Pet Sounds and Smile - and bringing them to life for a new audience in the 21st Century" more so than his 2000s output.

What!? If there isn't at least half an hour breaking down the brilliance that is "Speed Turtle," I'll be furious!

I'm thinking stuff like "this is the real heart and soul of The Beach Boys on stage."

Yes, it will be interesting to see how they deal with the reason(s) why Brian has been a solo artist - and not a Beach Boy - for decades. Obviously I haven't seen it yet, but isn't that one of the themes of the doc in the first place, the road Brian has taken as a solo artist? And don't forget who the Executive Producer of the film is:

I'm sure the phrase "Taking back his legacy" will be uttered. I wonder if the 2012 will even garner a mention.

Now, how they address it could be interesting but I'm not holding my breath. Most Brian interviews are disappointingly overly-simple. I would expect Brian to simply say that he wanted to continue the reunion but Mike wanted to go back to "his Beach Boys" way. I'm not expecting much more than that.

Agreed, got to be mentioned. But I’d imagine any substantive or detailed comments are from others.

The infamous "I feel like I was fired" quote might make an appearance. I feel like if the reunion gets brought up, it'll be glossed over fairly quickly. Maybe have one of the talking heads saying "seeing Brian Wilson on stage with The Beach Boys again was a dream come true."

The "I feel like I was fired" quote does bring up another interesting question. Will Mike Love actually make an appearance in the film at all? I mean, isn't he the elephant in the room? So much of Brian's solo career is viewed and talked about as - not writing, not performing with, and not associating with Mike Love. It has come up in virtually every interview Brian has given.

I’m sure he’s not in it. For one, he’d be mentioned in the pre-release press FOR SURE, and he’s not.

Not a chance. Much like the Smile doc, Mike will not be given a chance to tell his side.

I thought I’d heard or read—but may well be wrong here—that other BBs were offered an opportunity to be in the bwps doc but declined.

There was some interview or documentary with Brian after Carl died and Brian talked about having written new songs for the band and going out on tour with them the next year (1999). I wonder what changed his mind?

With Brian, one never knows. How many times has he announced projects that never happened? (A lot.)
But that he wrote songs intended for them around that time seems to be true, based on Joe Thomas's post-TWGMTR interviews about the origins of some of those songs.
