It's water under the bridge now, but when you look back on the 2010s, it is a shame that they couldn't have kept it together. Perhaps the material from NPP and UTL make two more Beach Boys albums, or maybe just one more really good one. You could have had The Beach Boys touring for the 50th Anniversary of Pet Sounds.
Just a thought really, nothing more.

I don't know if the touring situation could've ever been worked out due to Mike's and Brian's very different philosophies/conditions, but the 50th Anniversary touring band, including Brian, definitely could've/should've continued longer. I think it's safe to say these issues will be debated for a long time in Beach Boys' circles.

I think it's safe to say these issues will be debated for a long time in Beach Boys' circles. To me, that's the key. Though not just touring, but music-making in general. That said, it seems pretty clear that the traditional "Brian loves the studio, Mike hates it" paradigm is no longer quite true. Mike no doubt still doesn't prefer the studio life, or laboring over this or that nuance of a track, but by any reasonable observation, neither does Brian. He has admitted himself that many ideas begin elsewhere (Joe Thomas), come to Brian for something, and return elsewhere. He hasn't been toiling away happily in the studio despite every opportunity to do so these past 10 years or so--especially the past five.
But at the end of the day, it seems to me that they just aren't really all that compatible in their approaches to music, at the very least.

I really want to see a Mike Love documentary. For the Second most talked about member of the group, his story has rarely been explored. He opened up quite a bit in his autobiography from a couple years ago, and, just being 100% honest, in 2021, I would find a movie about his life a lot more interesting than another movie about Brian.

That could be interesting, especially if someone could get him off script. ("Wilsons did too many drugs, I went to India in 1968, I brought the positivity, blah blah blah")

I don't know if its "painful" for me as much as typical very late career nonsense that tends to pollute damn near any band with a quarter century or more under their belt.

Brian has said something quite condemnatory about this new film. When asked if he liked long promise road he said yeah it's a good song. That is too funny

Also, they seem to partially answer Kapitan's question about the new song in that it's a fully fleshed out song. We'll see how Oscar worthy it is.
Indeed, they say: "Brian also wrote a new one specifically for the movie called “Right Where I Belong,” and the filmmakers are not shy in hoping it finally is the one that lands him an Oscar nomination."
Hopes are high for the song, it seems. We'll see whether it lives up to those hopes.

I'm not overly-excited about this doc, however, I am glad it's a documentary and not another movie! Do you know how you can almost predict what Brian's going to say, or not say, in interviews? well, I'm getting that vibe again, as well as the "celebrities" like McCartney, Elton John, and Springsteen. I hope I'm wrong. Same thing with the comments on the songs playing in the car. More one word or one sentence comments? "Dennis wrote that one", "Carl sang that one; I wanted him to sing that one", and, of course, "That's a sweet song; I put lot of love in that song". Maybe they'll be interesting, I don't know...And, I can't leave out the obligatory "staged" sessions in the studio. "Can I hear that again, please?" "That note is flat; try it again, please". "Can you come in one beat sooner on the drums; that's it; perfect, that's perfect!." Oh, and, "Thank you, that sounds great!"
So, we're holding out for two songs - "Long Promised Road" and "Right Where I Belong". Hmm. I wonder what the lyrics will be like for "Right Where I Belong"? I'm sorry, I'll go away now.

My expectations are low but hopes are high.
For example, the autobiography was much, much better than I had any expectations it would be (as was TWGMTR). The autobiography belied the BW tendency toward the one- or two-sentence "stories," but I found it still very much in BW's voice (as opposed to the first autobiography, which was obviously not him).
In this case, we know he wasn't overly chatty--the linked story makes that clear--but hopefully those archives mentioned in the article plus the other people interviewed make it worthwhile. If not, oh well. Another one to throw onto the pile.

Even though I'm not expecting a whole lot, I'm sure I could think of far worse ways to spend two hours.
