Any N.Y. Giants' fans out there? Well, I have bad news. On the first day of practice, WR Sterling Shepard fractured his thumb, and WR Corey Coleman suffered a torn ACL and is out for the year.

I always have mixed feeling this time of year.
On one hand, I love NFL football, and with the Orioles at the start of a rebuild, it'll be nice to have some exciting sports in Baltimore.
On the other hand, it's a sign that the end of summer isn't far away.

A strange pessimistic optimism reigns supreme in Minnesota, and it's back, as always. Vikings fans always find a way to simultaneously talk about how "this could be the year" even while talking about "how will we blow it this year?"
We're returning a lot from our promising, but eventually disappointing, 8-7-1 team last year ... which returned a lot from the previous year's 13-3 team.
The OL is rebuilt again. We're dealing with injured DTs and DBs. But there is a lot of talent again, and some key people from the Gary Kubiak orbit (including Gary Kubiak as associate head coach or something). Rededication to the run plus defense, as always, is the mantra.

I didn't realize that Gary Kubiak was back in the NFL. I guess he's recovered from whatever illness he had when he left coaching.

Yes, Zimmer brought him in to help our young, first-year OC Kevin Stefanski (who is something of a Vikings lifer despite still only being in his 30s; he started under Leslie Frazier and is the sole remaining staffer). Gary, his kid, and at least one other guy were brought in.

Unbelievable, but another Giants' WR is out. Now, WR Golden Tate was suspended four games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances. Is Homer Jones out there?

Maybe they want former first-rounder Laquan Treadwell, who is coming off his third and best season: 35 catches, 302 yards, 1 TD. He was supposed to be a big, strong, relatively athletic receiver who could succeed outside or over the middle. Instead he's constantly being beaten out by people. Currently Chad Beebe--CHAD BEEBE--is ahead of him. I think Brandon Zylstra is, too.

Despite going 6-1 as a starter in his rookie season (would've been 7-0 if not for an impossible pass from Patrick Mahomes), half of the football "experts" in Baltimore have declared Lamar Jackson a failure.
I'm not expecting Drew Brees numbers, but with a sound defense, a new arsenal of faster receivers, and an offense built more for Lamar's skills than Joe Flacco's (now in Denver), I'm pretty optimistic about the Ravens chances, especially since the AFC North is wide open. The Bengals are a mess. The much hyped Browns look improved on paper. Roethlisberger is going into year 16 of his career without Antonio Brown.

I've heard a few "experts" on radio and TV commenting on Lamar Jackson. I haven't heard them necessarily referring to him as a failure, but their message has been consistent that Lamar will have to change his game to stay healthy and be more successful (i.e. winning big games/advancing in the playoffs). They are saying that he runs way too much, not finding receivers, and has to cut down on that significantly.

When I say "experts," I was sarcastically referring to the armchair QB fans in town, several of whom I wonder why they even follow the Ravens since, despite having a very successful short history, these fans seem to derive very little joy from being fans. The talking heads have taken a far more level headed and logical approach. And, the Ravens know the offensive approach at the end of last season isn't sustainable, and was more out of necessity than anything. The emphasis in camp has been on improving Lamar as a passer.

I really like Lamar Jackson. I do worry that, as a physical player who is a good runner, he's going to have a shortened and/or injury-prone career, but when he's on the field I'd expect him to do good things.
It's interesting to me that in the past few years it seems we've had a resurgence in rushing from the QB position. That was really frowned upon through the 80s and 90s, anyway, for the same reason I bring it up: risk of injury to an important position. Sure, you'd have your Randall Cunninghams and Steve Youngs, but there weren't many guys who did much more than scramble out of the pocket and pick up a few yards en route to the sidelines.
Last year there were something like eight QBs rushing for more than 350 yards, and three over 500 (Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Deshaun Watson). It makes for a fun game and it's a great weapon for those teams. But it's also quite a risk.

kds, did you read about Robert Griffin III? He broke his thumb and is out 4-8 weeks. I'm starting to think that it just isn't meant to be for this guy!

The NFL has tapped Joan Jett to sing the opening of NBC's Sunday Night Football with Carrie Underwood.
Makes sense, since they've been using "Waiting All Day for Sunday Night" since 2006 (first with Pink, then Faith Hill, then Underwood), which is Jett's "I Hate Myself for Loving You" with football lyrics.

Frankly I'm shocked. Oh, I love the move, but I wonder how many fans watching Sunday Night Football first, know that Joan Jett wrote the song, second, could name more than one song that Joan Jett recorded, and third, know who Joan Jett is?
