Everyone must have favourite moments when the drummer does something that really makes your ears prick up. One of mine has to be the fill in Led Zeppelin's "When The Levee Breaks". Bonham's drumming on this track bludgeons the listener into submission and that fill (here shortly after 5:09) supplies the coup de grâce:

I don’t know how a human can drum this fast and hard and melodic. One of those songs where I am listening to the drummer more than anyone or anything else.

Both great choices.
I have to admit, in the rock/pop music world, when I'm thinking about great drumming, my mind also goes to John Bonham first. And second, third, probably fourth and fifth...
Drums aren't where my focus goes, though, most of the time. I usually like drumming that doesn't stand out as opposed to that which does--even with great drummers. I also like my drummers to be musical, not just steady, flashy, and technically impressive (even though I do want those things, too). I think that's why "Ringo is a great drummer" always made sense to me even though some people historically dismissed him as not doing anything.
When Ringo begins adding little fills about 45 seconds in, for example, he's just perfect.
Bonham, of course, is much more noticeable and technically dazzling, but he was also very musical.

My favorite all time drum performance I think has those qualities. Joe Morello looking so cool while keeping that brilliant 5/4 beat!

If we're including jazz, I can't skip Tony Williams's work with the second great Miles Davis quintet. Check out his work through "Freedom Jazz Dance"! Once you get into the solos, he's truly comping for the soloists just as much as a pianist would. Sure, he's got the hat going, keeping time. But everything else he's doing is amazing. Some of those fills (often quite quiet) are ridiculous.

Many of their primary posters (as well as those at SSMB) just really prefer the on-topic stuff. It was an occasional issue when I was around those boards more, but really it's fine. It's just the way they prefer to talk about things. I personally enjoy a full range of topics with my fellow BB fans, but some people really don't want to stray too far from the heart of what brings us together in the first place. I get it, I just don't feel the same way.
It's a big world and an even bigger internet, so there's room for all. May a thousand flowers bloom.

How about this moment on Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica, when drummer John French lets rip towards the end of "Sugar 'N Spikes" (here at 1:54)? Indeed, French (whom Beefheart treated abominably) is impressive throughout his entire time with the Captain, the way Keith Moon was for The Who:

How about this moment on Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica, when drummer John French lets rip towards the end of "Sugar 'N Spikes" (here at 1:54)? Indeed, French (whom Beefheart treated abominably) is impressive throughout his entire time with the Captain, the way Keith Moon was for The Who: Possibly the most incomprehensible great drummer, in that he's a piece of a generally incomprehensible ensemble working for an entirely incomprehensible bandleader. He--like Tony Williams with Miles Davis, really--doesn't act like a drummer so much as an orchestral percussionist. It's less boom-bash-boom-bash and more, well, whatever it is.
But whatever it is, is really interesting stuff. But you do have to feel bad for the man. "Play like windshield wipers." OK...

That reminds me of this 1973 quote from UK disc jockey John Peel in Creem magazine: "At the Albert Hall last year, Beefheart was standing at the back of the floor while the band worked towards a balance. 'How's that, Don,' asked Zoot Horn Rollo. 'Like a custard with two feathers sticking in it,' replied Don and the band went 'Aha' and adjusted their instruments accordingly."

Unless I'm getting my stories twisted, the heavy drum sound involved an elevator shaft or something? Anyhow it's an amazing sound, contrasting the sad, somber feel of the song. It's almost ironic.

Most encouraging to see this topic thriving at BBT. It's not doing too badly at EH but it's had three times as many views over here! As Cap'n intimated, different forums have different priorities -- and that's fine with me. Next time, I'll post a few tracks that include cymbal smashes at unexpected moments ("Johnny Carson", anyone?).
