Hello friends!
Please join us this Tuesday at 8 EST for BeachBoysTalk on Facebook Live, YouTube, and Twitch as we welcome legendary “Wrecking Crew” member Tommy Morgan! He is known in our world for his harmonica work on Pet Sounds, Good Vibrations, and SMiLE! It should be quite interesting and an honor for Greg and me.
We will also discuss our top five favorite Mike Love vocals, I will share some thoughts in our Many Moods of Matt segment, we will check in with David Beard from Endless Summer Quarterly, and Greg will play requests!
We hope to see you all Tuesday!

Fantastic.
I'd love to hear anything about him working on That Lucky Old Sun especially, something contrasting the old days to what it was like to work with Brian more recently.

Funny you say that, that is a question I have prepared for him!

Hi Matt. Looking forward to watching it the way I did last time, spread out over two (or maybe three) evenings. The alternative is to skip stuff but all segments of the show are must-sees, not least Greg's fantastic musical contributions!

Tommy was so interesting. He said that around 1990 Brian seemed to be back to his old self in regard to being focused in the studio. He said Brian during TLOS was the same as in the 60's which I thought was a very interesting answer.

Another great episode tonight! Tommy Morgan was full of fascinating stories about being in the studio with legends such as The Andrews Sisters, Henry Mancini, The Carpenters, and, oh, Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys. Tommy said that Brian was a very bright and intelligent person, and respectful of the musicians. Brian did tell them exactly what he wanted, but he allowed the musicians to do their thing. I found it interesting that despite recording with The Wrecking Crew several times, Tommy never played at a Phil Spector session.
Like all of the previous guests, Tommy was in no hurry to leave. He entertained all questions...and more. And, he's writing a book! I know I've said it before but hold on to these episodes. They have historical value.

Thoroughly enjoyed the interview, beachboystalkmatt. I can't stress enough how much I think your approach of really showing these musicians respect for who they are and what they've done helps in how well things go.
What I mean is, you're not behaving as if your goal is just bludgeoning them with "hey, TELL ME A CRAZY STORY ABOUT BRIAN WILSON," but rather giving musicians the credit they deserve. Obviously the show is going to be Beach Boys themed, but people like Tommy Morgan (and many of the others) have had great careers. It's great that you ask questions that let them spread out to talk more broadly--and that it doesn't come across as pro forma pandering when you do.
It feels as if it is (and I want nothing more than for it to be) an exploration of the musical universe that comprises not just those famous few principals, but all of the musicians interacting with them in various ways, at various times, in various contexts.
Honestly, obviously, the Beach Boys don't exist as we know them without all of these people. We can debate who meant what and who cares all day long, and that's why we have message boards, etc. But that band was never just the principal musicians of the moment. The music was always bigger than just that.

Thanks for the kind words, Kapitan! Tommy Morgan is really fascinating and has had quite the career. I can't wait for him to finish his book!
