Artist: Captain Beefheart and His/The Magic Band I debated the Cap'n for both B and C ... and might debate him again for D and V!

Artist: Carl Wilson. I have a book, a documentary and have photos of Carl on my wall at work. One of my bucket list items is to visit his grave. He had the voice and demeanor of an angel. I am obsessed. Song: Closer - Nine Inch Nails. The first time I saw the video I was blown away. The Downward Spiral came out when I was getting my first divorce. I played it loud and alot.Album: Chronic Town - REM. Technically it is an EP, but it reminds me of my college days, and my best friend Andrea said I had to listen to it and we went to see REM at the Lawrence Opera House. I made sure I saw them every time they came to Kansas City. A highly enjoyable precursor of amazing things to comeSo you know Lawrence. My late pen pal lived there for years, in Peterson Road. She was also a big fan of NIN and "Closer" in particular. Although we were both fans of Gary Numan (who himself once described "Closer" as his favourite song), she never managed to convert me to Trent Reznor and company.

I might as well. He deserves it.
Artist: Carl Wilson - I still REALLY miss him. I can only imagine how Brian feels.
Album: Carl Wilson - Well, it does have "Heaven" on it.
Song - " Carl's Big Chance" - And it rocks!

Artist: CCR
Album: Cars (s/t). Their debut album and a collection of greatness they would never repeat as a whole
Song: California Dreamin'--The Mamas & The Papas. I love the Beach Boys' version, but M&P are hard to beat

Artist: Cat Stevens, Jim Croce, and Sam Cooke.
Album: I gotta go with the best-selling album of 1995 and one of the best selling albums of all-time: Cracked Rear View. Four songs were top 15 hits (3 were top 10). Honestly, I had to look up which, because nearly every song on the album sounds like a hit. It just so happened that I gave it a listen a few weeks ago and was overcome with nostalgia. I listened to it a lot when I was a kid and they were one of the first shows I attended. Well-crafted pop-rock. Some emotional depth to the lyrics. Guitars, bass, drums, a little organ, and a gifted singer. Real instruments, no autotune. Impeccably mixed. A classic.
Song: "California Girls". Not going to overthink this one...

I was pretty confident no one was going to snag it before I had the opportunity to post. In all seriousness, whenever I return to it it stands the test of time. Always makes me feel good. Right from the opening drum fill and ringing electric guitars (which sound fantastic throughout). Although, being as familiar with the songs as I am, I know the subject matter isn't all smiles: "Let Her Cry" (an alcoholic partner), "I'm Going Home" (passing of a parent), and "Drowning" (prejudice/racism), especially. Pretty emotional stuff. And, Darius is a dynamic singer. Objectively, the only flaw I can see is that perhaps the quality dips with the final two tracks (and the album starts to feel a little long at 46 min.), but I think everything up to that point is top-notch. (Still, those songs aren't bad, not at all.)

I'll say this: I've always said their songs all sounded like you'd heard them before, like you knew them already. While my usually snarky self meant that as an insult, I increasingly understand how that could also be a huge compliment. And frankly I've never considered the production side of it with them, having already dismissed them.

Artist: Bob Dylan.
I'll go ahead and do the obvious here. But anyone looking for a kind of epic sweep to late 90s and early 00s indie rock, try The Delgados, especially The Great Eastern.
Album: Destroyer (KISS). It's one of the most important albums of my youth, a favorite of teenage me that honestly still holds up because of strong hooks, performances, and great production. But this was far from easy, with Dear Catastrophe Waitress (Belle & Sebastian), Daisies of the Galaxy (Eels), The Delivery Man (Elvis Costello), Divers (Joanna Newsom), and A Day at the Races (Queen) all right there.
Song: "Dayton Ohio, 1903" either the Randy Newman or Harry Nilsson version.
This is another impossible choice. Honestly my pick for greatest has to be "A Day in the Life" by the Beatles," which I didn't name because it is just too easy. But I had literally dozens of songs I could talk myself into. The toughest competition might have been "Dour Percentage" by Of Montreal, Downtown Train (Tom Waits), Debbie Downer (Courtney Barnett), Don't Stop Me Now (Queen), Devoted to You (The Everly Bros), Don't Change Your Plans (Ben Folds Five), Don't Think Twice It's All Right (Dolly Parton cover of the Dylan song), and as my oddball choice, Donkey Island (Euros Childs).

Artist: John Denver - a very underrated artist. A great songwriter and a great singer. I saw him live with Hal Blaine on drums. A senseless death piloting his own airplane.
Album: The Doors - Not only a great debut album but one of the best albums ever. A special album at a special time.
Song: Dead Man's Curve - Jan really had it going. This is quite the production. Brian Wilson and Roger Christian got a songwriting credit. I'm a bit surprised the Beach Boys never attempted this one somewhere along the way.

Nothing the least bit surprising this time...
Artist: Bob Dylan. Runner-up? The Doors.
Album: Bruce Springsteen's Darkness on the Edge of Town and Tom Petty's Damn the Torpedoes.
Song: The Beatles' "Dear Prudence" and "Don't Let Me Down".

Artist: Duran Duran. Don’t Judge 🤣 I’ve seen them twice in concert. Album: Days of Future Passed - The Moody Blues. There was a time when I was as obsessed over the Moody’s as I am now over The Beach Boys. Song: Darlin’ - The Beach Boys. Carl ❤️
