Yes, well said, and great example. We can literally change the feelings we will experience. Although, in this case, we are really just talking about lessening them, aren't we? Kind of, emotionally detaching ourselves from the objectionable association. And, these types of...things...aren't easily forgotten.
Look, I listened to Jerry Lee Lewis a week or so ago. I enjoyed it and recommended it here. That said, I couldn't help but think about the controversy surrounding him as I listened to it. I didn't feel strongly about it, nor did I focus on it, but it would momentarily pop into my mind. Enough so that I ended up reading a bit more about his personal life afterwards. To me, it's little more than a distraction. But, it is a distraction.
One last point on this topic that I'd meant to make, but it's an uncomfortable one: The chilling line from CSNY's "Ohio" has been ringing through my mind as I contemplate this topic - "what if you knew her and found her dead on the ground?" Stark, but it gets to the heart of it. What if we knew the victim? I'm sure each of our responses would have been different! And, I don't think that ought to be dismissed.

Of course they'd be different. But must they be different, since we didn't?
(That isn't meant legally. That is for the crime & punishment thread. This is meant in terms of things like are being discussed here: how to think about some awful person's music.)

Edit: Kapitan, because we didn't, our positions and rationalizations might come a little too easily. That's the concern, I think.

I don't think it's not worth it, but I also don't think it's something like an obligation or necessarily a good (to say nothing of productive) thing to do. Yet as we've been talking about, it's not exactly a choice anyway. We don't consciously choose what to feel, or even what to think.

I still enjoy listening to Bill Cosby's albums. Some of the funniest stuff I've ever heard. I still think Pete Rose was one of the greatest ballplayers ever. I liked Bill Clinton as a President, even though some of the things he did in his private life were despicable.
Now, on the flip side, there are actors who played terrible people on tv or in movies, and when I see them on the screen, I hate them. Like the one armed man on The Fugitive. I'm sure he was a great man in real life. But then, what is real?

Anybody have any Bill Cosby albums? Do you still enjoy them? How about The Cosby Show? Still watch it?
Now, how do you feel? Anything change?
To be honest, I never really watched The Cosby Show. But, I think his standup movie - Bill Cosby Himself - is still brilliant.

I watched I Spy a lot before it was taken off the air. I'd still watch it if it were on.

I remember when he was hailed as an "Alice Cooper for the new generation." I guess without the humor and great songs. My lasting memory of Manson is an infamous appearance he made on That Metal Show on Vh1 Classic a few years ago. He was drunk or high, or both, and just asked like an ass. According to Eddie Trunk, the network insisted Manson be the lead guest, which meant he'd be on set when the second guest, Saxon's Biff Byford, came out. Poor Biff could barely get a word out.

Manson has definitely had a dark cloud of allegations over him for the past couple of years. Luckily any convictions won't affect me in the slightest, because I always thought his music was shit to begin with.

Luckily any convictions won't affect me in the slightest, because I always thought his music was shit to begin with. I used to think he was just a jerk, but the last few years have revealed that he's "allegedly" a big time creep. I think there are maybe two songs of his I like. I actually saw him at Ozzfest in 2001. I'll say that despite my not knowing or liking much of the material in his 60 minute set, it was an interesting show.
