Good find. I didn't know the group ever performed that one live.

Thanks for posting. Beautiful song.
Interesting hearing it with (I assume a) mellotron handling the string arrangement. (An arrangement that--particularly in the instrumental section--I think is one of the finest things ever to grace a Beach Boys or Brian Wilson recording.) It gives it an eerie kind of vibe!

Good find. I didn't know the group ever performed that one live. It looks like they performed it 3 times in April of 1974 according to Setlist FM.

Gold!
I really enjoyed that, lack of decent copy editing notwithstanding.
"They're the only group in the world who could be popular for the rest of their days playing the music they made famous in the sixties. ... I have a feeling that fifty years from now when we might happen to hear one of the songs, we'll still smile and feel something special."
And how about this!?
"The key to it is Mike Love who's [sic] stage personality is nothing short of amazing. He clowns, he dances and jokes while moving from one end of the stage to another."
It's a perfect encapsulation of the Mike Love Phenomenon. He's being praised for being the one who makes the audience have fun while feeling they're watching the band also having fun (per the context just before that quoted bit), and his joking and prancing is the key for this writer. That exact description of his activity is what many (myself included, to a degree) cringe at and think detracts. The fact that this show was in the Midwest makes the observation even more perfect. You can just see the coastal hipster sneer at the observation.

That’s actually a pretty good review - other than the fact that the reviewer seemed to enjoy Mike Love’s stage presence! 🤣 It was interesting that he noted the wear on Dennis and Carl’s voices from the constant touring. He sort of dug at Al a bit for his less than dynamic performance. Thanks so much for the link! Had to go back and watch the Billy Hinsche production of “ The Beach Boys on the Road” today, since the footage on Disc 1 was shot April - June 1974. Even though that porta pack camera took horrible video, it was still enjoyable watching it again. I just wish Billy would have included longer segments of the concert footage. Made me miss Carl so much 😢.

If the Beach Boys had ever got serious about performing Pet Sounds live in the later years, most of those Brian leads should have been handled by Carl. Carl's voice was similar to the young Brian's, but a little softer. Similar range, maybe just a few notes lower, although I couldn't say for sure. He had so much range! I hope that audience appreciated what they were hearing and knew how lucky they were to be there.
