Sounds great, Matt. Very good guest. Leaf was so visible in BW's late 90s to early 00s return to activity and prominence ... yet also he seemed to almost vanish from that orbit shortly after Brian Wilson Presents Smile. Curious to hear from him on, well, everything.

Thanks guys! Just an FYI, last week we had on Peter Ames Carlin. The week before that we had on Scott Wilson, and the week before that we had on Joel Selvin discussing his book Hollywood Eden. It has been a great time! Those episodes are on our Facebook page if you’re interested!

I caught the show last night and it was great! David Leaf did not disappoint. He was both entertaining and informative, and like all of your other guests, he was in no hurry to leave. He was even asking for more questions from the chat room. I hope you have him on again; there's still so many subjects to delve into.

I didn't catch it live but plan to watch it soon. Looking forward to it, especially now that I hear it went well.

I was not aware it was his idea to include SMiLE stuff on the good vibrations box set. He also explains why he did not do anything with the BB after Pet Sounds. He had a lot of great insights! Thanks for joining us!

Hey beachboystalkmatt, not to sound like an idiot (though I am one...), but are you no longer hosting your archived videos on Twitch? I watched the previous ones there after-the-fact, but now I'm seeing "No Videos Found" on your page.

We had to take them down because twitch does not allow any music that’s not original when it is not live if that makes sense. We have all of our past shows on our Facebook page, and now we are streaming on youtube. I think the last few are on there as well. Thanks!

It's an interesting question David Leaf raises, which is whether Brian would have ever done solo tours if Carl hadn't passed away.
If not, though, is that better or worse? The natural assumption would be that he would have continued in the vein he'd carried himself in the previous years, with occasional appearances with the Beach Boys. Would people rather have seen the Beach Boys joined on stage by Brian a few times a year but nothing else than what it is we got, which was near-constant Brian Wilson tours with his band, but no Beach Boys shows with him (until 2012)?

I always point to an interview after Carl died where Brian briefly talked about doing show with the Boys "in the spring" (of 1999). Obviously, something changed.

If he hadn't started touring, maybe the focus would have stayed on recording - which, to me, is not a bad thing. In addition to the solo album in 1988, there were many other tracks recorded around that time that ended up on singles, b-sides, soundtracks (Let's Go to Heaven in My Car, Too Much Sugar, He Couldn't Get His Poor Old Body to Move, Being With the One You Love, Daddy's Little Girl, Goodnight Irene). Sweet Insanity was recorded but not released. We got two new albums in 1995 - I Just Wasn't Made for These Times, and Orange Crate Art. Then Imagination in 1998. Those are all albums I find very enjoyable; more enjoyable that much of what has come since.

There would've been a lot of factors at play. Remember that Brian and Carl weren't on the best of terms at the time and, if I'm correct (and I stand to be corrected), they only fully reconciled when Carl's illness became terminal. A lot depended on Melinda. She was on a mission, moving Brian to Chicago, getting Brian "out there" as a solo artist, getting his "story" told. In my opinion, that Don Was documentary featuring Brian Wilson as a solo artist was very telling.
I think the overwhelming number of Beach Boys' fans had mixed feelings. What fan wouldn't welcome a Brian Wilson solo album where he had the opportunity to do whatever he wanted to do. People were talking about that possibility for decades. I'm sure there was a percentage of "Brian Wilson is a genius"/Mike Love Haters who were pulling for Brian to breakaway completely, which is basically what he did. Well, they got their wish. Were they happy with what they got? Imagination? Gettin' In Over My Head? Brian Wilson Presents Smile? That Lucky Old Sun? I wasn't. We lost several years of Beach Boys' albums.
I'm not comparing Melinda to Eugene Landy, so don't misunderstand, but I think had Carl not passed away, you would've seen a continuation of the Landy plan, meaning Brian would walk that line of being a solo artist (like Brian Wilson 1988 and Sweet Insanity) and being a Beach Boy (like Still Cruisin'). I think Brian's non-participation with Summer In Paradise was an aberration; that was a unique period in time with unique circumstances. I'm guessing relations between Brian and the Beach Boys would've healed somewhat (even without Carl's illness they kind of did anyway), and Brian would've "showed up" at selected concerts and contributed a song or two or three to any future Beach Boys' albums, again much like Still Cruisin'. Regardless of what actually did happen, and regardless of what Brian sometimes said in interviews, I don't think Brian ever wanted to completely...leave The Beach Boys.
