I'm kind of surprised, if given the choice, the majority of voters are opting to include Stamos.

And honestly, Al has been more pointedly anti-Mike than Brian in interviews since 2012. At least that's the impression I come away with (not that I've been tallying or something). It seems to me that relationship is bad. That said, this band has a long history of being terrible to one another, then getting back together, then being terrible to one another, ...

I'm kind of surprised, if given the choice, the majority of voters are opting to include Stamos. I think that's more a figurative, "yes, goddamnit, whatever it takes! Just appreciate it!" vote than a literal one. I don't see anyone demanding their money back if Uncle Jesse doesn't come out for "Forever."

Both times I saw Al's storyteller shows, he got in a playful dig at Mike, much to the delight of the 'istas scattered in the audience.

It's strange how Mike and Al seemed to be best buddies through the 70's - the clean guys versus the druggies - and became enemies later. I don't know exactly when the seeds were sown for this. I remember Mike complaining about Al having a song on Still Cruisin' that had nothing to do with his original concept for the album - Beach Boys songs featured in movies. Yet it was okay for Somewhere Near Japan to be included on that album. Somewhere along the way, Al complained about the cheerleaders being in the show. Correct me if I'm wrong, but when it started, they were just using cheerleaders from local high schools or colleges; then later, they actually had their own group of touring cheerleaders, "The Beach Boys Cheerleaders". I'm sure Mike thought it was cool to be surrounded by teenage girls on their tours. Al hated it. Don't know how Carl felt about it. Bruce? He was too busy adjusting his mic stand and clapping to notice.

Indeed. I think it's a good example of how relationships are complicated.
I can understand why, if you're on the road for weeks on end and you aren't into anything stronger than wine or beer (and I'm assuming...I don't know whether Al drank), if you're interested in your family life, if you're interested in doing your job in a professional manner, then (genius or not) feeling like you're always catering to less dependable guys with boatloads of demons makes sense. You can imagine that guy thinking the other guy into TM, the other guy not into drugs, well, he's your best bet as a partner.
But as time goes on, the drug culture changes, the various habits of the surviving members change, you can easily imagine the other aspects of the relationship starting to take hold and mean more. Suddenly maybe (SPECULATING) you're not so sure that Love has quite the business sense he claims, the feel for what's commercial that he claims. You're maybe realizing the changes in the new material (which is itself fewer and farther between to begin with) aren't so great, that maybe the Wilsons really were necessary. Maybe the increasingly litigious atmosphere turned him off.
Who knows? Not us--not really. But when you're spanning 60 years of relationships, they're bound to change!

Whatever it was that caused the rift between Mike and Al - and it's never just one thing, it's usually multiple things - I always wondered why or how they couldn't "mend the fences". In the history of The Beach Boys, members were periodically...suspended...but they were always allowed to rejoin the band. Nobody could've been more irresponsible than Brian and Dennis Wilson, and both of them were shown the door, at least temporarily, only to return at a later date, after they served their punishment and supposedly cleaned up their act(s). However, with Al, somehow it became permanent. And, the funny thing is (well, it's not really funny), what Al did (excessive complaining and/or disparaging Mike) doesn't seem as serious as appearing on stage stoned, drunk, naked, playing the wrong songs, or not appearing at all. Or, maybe disapraging Mike IS worse than those other actions. I guess Mike thought Brian and Dennis were irreplaceable or at least more...necessary...than Al live. For a long time I thought Mike and Al would kiss and make up. I mean, The Beach Boys always do! But, after Brian recruited Al, there was no way Al was gonna leave Brian Wilson for Mike Love. When Brian finally retires from the road, and I'm assuming Mike is still going strong, maybe then Al will be allowed to come home.
