Quoting the relevant highlight from that for anyone not digging into it: But there is a lot of talk about the business and his strategy, so it's definitely interesting on a general level, too. Thanks for sharing.

Anything short of The Beach Boys playing concerts together like they did in 2012 wouldn't make it for me although I would eat up every bit of everything regardless.
Or I should clarify that I don't need a 67 show tour but at least a few performances of the actual band and not some contrived attribute nonsense

I think you're far more likely to get "contrived attribute nonsense" than (m)any performances from the band, so perhaps, as Westley from the Princess Bride said...

I'm actually cautiously excited about a "definitive" doc. Perhaps with the FF set, this documentary won't be so fast to handle the early 70s period at breakneck speed like Endless Harmony did.

Me too. Hoping it's a multipart, too, at least like the relatively recent Eagles one. None of this 1-to-2 hour stuff. I'd much rather see a full, Beatles Anthology length kind of thing, and if not that, the closer to it, the better.

Maybe I'm being too literal, but I took Azoff's use of "definitive" as meaning it'll be an upgrade over Endless Harmony, which I believe is 105 minutes. But, then again, there was a gangling carrot about a documentary in 2012, and result was an extended EPK (Doin' It Again). Hopefully, Azoff's presence doesn't lead to those typical BB shenanigans.

One thing I've been thinking since the past few posts in this thread:
I really hope the upcoming "definitive" doc doesn't spend any unnecessary time on the guys' childhoods or the formation of the group. While I'm strongly suspect they will, and I don't doubt they will have a few new anecdotes, pictures, or whatever if they do, it has been a part of doc after doc, interview after interview.
If 20-25% of the running time is about the Wilson boys singing "Ivory Tower" in their shared bedroom, or the Wilsons and Loves singing at Christmases, or about spending the Wilson's vacation-food money on (and/or getting Mrs. Jardine to pay for) rented equipment, or about calling the local radio station repeatedly to up-vote "Surfin" ... well, it will be an unfortunate use of limited time, in my opinion.
That said, I think they will rehash those stories rather than spend inordinate time on the things I'm more curious to hear about--like that 1967-75 era that is so often glossed over as "then Brian went to bed, Dennis started writing more, and BOOM, Brian's back!"--in the same way that bands like the Beach Boys play their hits in concert rather than obscure tracks. The documentary will of course be meant to reach a wide audience, and we can't expect Joe Schmoe to have seen three or four documentaries on the group already.
Anyway, knowing it won't be skipped, I hope it's at least minimized.

I think the usual storylines that we're all familiar with will be covered. That's why I'm hoping this is a two part, or 3-4 hour doc so that 1967-75 era isn't treated as an afterthought as it so often is.

I think BECAUSE it is a multi-part documentary, those childhood stories will be explored. I'm curious if old clips, or how many old clips from prior documentaries, will be used. If they have to rehash a lot of old, familiar ground, it would be nice if they had new interviews. However, knowing The Beach Boys, the stories would probably be the same anyway.
I am trying to hold out hope for this project because this is an Irving Azoff Company production, and maybe the first real "thing" he/they've done since the deal was consummated. I hope Iconic wasn't responsible for releasing Feel Flows around...August.

However, knowing The Beach Boys, the stories would probably be the same anyway. Ha! I'd say knowing the Beach Boys, the stories will probably be told differently! Similarly enough to seem the same upon casual listening, different enough for people like us to say, "wait, wasn't it Dennis who did that last time you told it?" etc.
Really, I won't begrudge covering that same ground. But I do hope that it isn't given undue weight. There's a long career to be addressed.

Well I would like to know if anyone in the band ever did drugs and if the band members can be divided into those who did drugs and those who didn't. And I'm also very interested in whether Mike helped Paul write any songs when they were in India together. And I'm also very curious about whether Bruce brought a version of pet sounds to England and played it for Paul and John. These are the kind of stories that have never been told before and inquiring minds want to know.

Well I would like to know if anyone in the band ever did drugs and if the band members can be divided into those who did drugs and those who didn't. I don't know if you're being serious or posting tongue-in-cheek. But, yes, the group was very much divided into those who did drugs and those who didn't. Mid/late 1977, Mike and Al had just about enough of the Wilsons'...bad habits. They had a serious blowout around Labor Day 1977, stopped traveling together, and, frankly, stopped recording together (see M.I.U.). Eventually, Carl cleaned up in the late 1970's and ultimatums were given to Brian and Dennis in the early 1980's.
It has also been written that Bruce did not approve of the guys' "lifestyle" in the late 1960's/early 1970's, and it affected the amount of time he spent with the group.

Oh the old professor was just making a joke. I tried to isolate the most tedious and repeated fodder that we always hear in beach boy interviews.

I would hope to get mostly new talking head clips from the surviving bandmembers. But, you're right, the stories would be the same. Mike: "I told Brian the one thing everyone understand is boy / girl." Brian: "I love Spector and The Four Freshman." Yada Yada
