I'm a big fan of home demos by my favorite artists. This one got stuck in my head today out of nowhere, so I thought I'd share it. Feel free to do the same when the inspiration strikes. I don't know, I guess it's the intimacy of a home demo over a studio recording. But, in this case, there's also a what-could-have-been or just a sadness, as Buddy died before properly recording the song. Lennon's Dakota demos give me the same feeling. Huh, it just occurred to me that this song choice is quite fitting...

GREAT topic idea! I've never seen it before.
"The Apartment Tapes" are interesting, too. I recall somebody sharing them with me maybe 15 years ago: before that, despite really liking Buddy Holly, I'd never heard of such a thing. Gone far too soon. I have always wondered whether he'd have continued to be a force to be reckoned with in popular music, and not fade away...

I'm surprised how good the recording quality is. This is, what, 1958? And his performances are really quite good. Obviously, he was a talented guy, but still..a lot of demos that make the rounds (from decades later) sound much worse. Quite a few of these, including this one, I believe, were overdubbed and released after his death. Some sound pretty good - thanks to decent-to-good performances by a guy just goofing around or perhaps "jotting down ideas" for his next project.

The Double Fantasy discussion has me listening to John's unreleased demos again. Here's a humorous (and pretty spirited) version of on old favorite of his: "Rock Island Line".
Great ending! Can't help but smile.
