If I could go back in time, I would have actually watched The Beach Boys back in 1986 when they performed at Sandstone Amphitheater with The Moody Blues. I was in my mid twenties and the Moody Blues were my favorite band at the time and I could have cared less about The Beach Boys back then. I know I danced to some of the Surf songs, but I thought they were just a fun oldies band and to this day, do not remember listening to Carl sing God Only Knows. I just can’t believe I actually got to see my now all time favorite singer perform on stage, yet I don’t remember it at all. I do remember that Justin Hayward had lost some of his top register. The Moody Blues were really great that night, yet the memory just devastates me, since I don’t remember Carl at all. I think The Beach Boys set was when I bought drinks and went to the bathroom. I had never heard Pet Sounds, Sunflower or Surf’s Up, so I had no idea what a great band the Beach Boys were. Still bothers me to this day.

If it was the gig linked below (with thanks to AGD's website; the set list is in the YouTube blurb), that must have been one humdinger of a bathroom break, cl. My guess is that you saw their performance (or some of it) and it just didn't register, or doesn't now. I watched the entire Live Aid concert (UK and US) on TV in 1985 and can't remember a single second of U2's iconic performance, even though they are now one of my favourite bands! Pity you missed Carl, but at least he's there for us to enjoy on the albums and DVDs.

I saw them on 8/31/86 at the Allentown Fair in Allentown, PA. It was a tight set, but short; they played two shows that night. The band really cleaned up their sound by then, just a few years removed from Brian and Dennis on stage. But, at the same time, as a diehard, I really felt the loss of Brian and Dennis.
I saw The Moody Blues a few years ago in Lancaster, PA on their Greatest Hits Tour. It was the first time I ever saw them live. Simply, it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to.

I remember being on a blanket in the grass, and I did watch Carl sing Darlin, but I was more familiar with the earlier stuff as I had seen Mike Love perform with Dean Torrance during Spring Break at South Padre Island in 1983. I actually made a bathroom/drink run during God Only Knows. Now it’s my favorite song and I can’t believe I didn’t pay attention back then. I do remember thinking that Carl had a lovely voice, because I did hear it. They sang California Dreamin in the encore. Still my favorite cover.

The Moody Blues put on a heck of a show that night. The Beach Boys set was definitely longer. I remember thinking it would never end! LOL! Gosh Al sounded so good. I didn’t even know enough about The Beach Boys back then to know that Brian was missing! That was my Moody Blues/Yes/Pink Floyd/King Crimson phase!

Again, I can’t thank you enough, because that audio really helped me remember parts of that night that I had until now, forgotten! I saw U2 during the Boy tour in 1981 and was in the 8th row at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas. Bono crowd surfed and I got to touch his thigh! I remember he climbed up onto the balcony on the second level. I also saw them on the October and War tours, but that one was my favorite. I remember standing in line trying to get tickets for the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 and the tickets sold out and I was so angry!

My late pen pal, the person who turned me onto them, saw them at Arrowhead Stadium in '92 during the Zoo-TV tour. She was from Kansas too. I did see King Crimson though (you mentioned them in another topic) -- once in London at the start of the "Larks' Tongues" tour when Jamie Muir was still with them and then in '83 (?) in Utrecht (NL) with Belew, Levin and Bruford. Two absolutely stunning gigs.

Two absolutely stunning gigs. I saw U2 late in what I consider their "legitimate" period, in the late '90s on the PopMart tour. (After that I know they kept being a massive tour draw, but their new music got less interesting.) While never a huge fan, it was an AMAZING show, even though I was literally in the second-to-last row of the gigantic Metrodome. Honestly, when Bono did certain things, it felt like he was doing them directly to me and my friends--which is what a great frontman does. They say Freddie had that gift, though sadly I never saw Queen live.
My sister, 9 years older, saw U2 as an up-and-coming band in the early/mid 80s at legendary First Ave. I envy her that.

The lone time I saw U2 was in 2005, on their How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb Tour. To be honest, I was pretty unwhelmed seeing them in person. Good show, but nothing mindblowing.
On the time travel thing, I'd love to go back and redo the C5O show I attended with the knowledge I have now of some of the deeper songs I wasn't familiar with then.

The 80's Beach Boys get dismissed by the hard core fans these days, but that was the era I was going to their concerts every year, and I always had a great time. 1983 at the Kingdome in Seattle, 1984/85/86/87/88 at the Puyallup Fair. The fair didn't usually bring back the same acts every year, the Beach Boys were the exception. I saw the Monkees in 87 at the fair, and I thought their crowd would be more enthusiastic than the Beach Boys'. Everywhere I looked that year, there were writeups about the reunion, but the energy of the crowd at the Beach Boys show was much greater than for the Monkees. I look back now and I realise how lucky I was to see them so many times when it was still Carl, Mike, Al and Bruce together (Brian was only at a couple of those shows). Did they play a lot of lesser known songs? No, but they nearly always had something new to promote (even some Carl solo songs), and when you've had as many hits of the Beach Boys, how do you fit in "deep tracks" without dropping some of the hits?

I was in the early stages of going "all in" on the Beach Boys when I saw them in 2012. I didn't appreciate some of the deeper cuts even though I had moved beyond just liking the greatest hits. I also regret only getting lawn seats and not seeing them in Cleveland the next day, but that was more a product of being 16 and not having a ton of cash.

I think my biggest Beach Boys-related "if I could go back in time" wish is not seeing Brian Wilson do his post-Imagination Pet Sounds tour. He came through in '98 or '99 and I was just beginning to really get into Smile; otherwise I was really only into Pet Sounds and didn't like much of anything else BB-related.
I'm not entirely sure why I didn't go--probably wasn't aware of it until I saw the review. But maybe I was short of cash, it being a theater show and me being just out of college.
It was only a couple years later when he came back around (with Paul Simon) and I got to see him, but I think that more intimate theater setting, plus the Pet Sounds setlist, would have been a lot of fun. Plus I believe he was using musicians from local orchestras at the time to help flesh out the parts (though I have vague recollections that this aspect might have fallen through for that show).

I was 31, and strapped for cash at the time. That's why I only bought lawn seats for my C50 show.
