Since yesterday marked the 55th Anniversary of the landmark album, UCR posted their top ten post Pet Sounds BB songs. I think 1-8 are pretty solid, but I personally wouldn't have Baby Blue or Aren't You Glad in my top ten, even though I like both songs. I love seeing Leaving This Town getting some love, but Til I Die seemed like a glaring omission. ultimateclassicrock.com/post-pet-sounds-beach-boys-songs/

Not a bad list, though not what I'd come up with. I don't want to pretend the below is definitive for me by any means, but it's my initial stab off the top of my head at a top 10 post-Pet Sounds list.
10. Busy Doin' Nothin' 9. Heroes and Villains
8. The Night Was So Young
7. Darlin'
6. From There to Back Again
5. Breakaway
4. Time to Get Alone 3. Cabinessence 2. This Whole World
1. Surf's Up
Plenty of runners up, though. Aren't You Glad, Wonderful, It's OK, Mona, Wake the World, All I Wanna Do, Til I Die, I'll Bet He's Nice, Isn't It Time, Our Prayer, I Went to Sleep...

1. Surf's Up 2. Good Vibrations 3. Til I Die 4. All I Wanna Do 5. From There to Back Again / PCH / Summer's Gone (yeah, I cheated here) 6. Steamboat 7. Leaving This Town 8. Friends 9. This Whole World 10. Sail On Sailor
That was tough, and it'll likely be different tomorrow.

My omission of "Good Vibrations" was accidental. While I know I said in my post on that single's thread that it wasn't quite up to the level of perfect song for me, not quite a favorite for me, it's sure as hell in the top 10 post-Pet Sounds songs! It would probably be in that 2-4 range.
I also like "Leaving This Town" and, even more so, "Hold On, Dear Brother." And now that I'm thinking about that era, "Marcella," "Big Sur," "California," and maybe especially "You Need a Mess of Help to Stand Alone" (which is a BIG favorite of mine, an embarrassing omission from my Top 10 as well).
It's funny how many songs can end up on a Top 10. One would guess 10, but one would be wrong!

kds lists "Leaving This Town", Robe Simo included "Deidre", and Kapitan mentioned "Mona" as a runner-up! What? Are you guys nuts?

I like all three of those songs, and I love "Mona." Obviously an all-time list rather than post-PS list would hurt it in my personal rankings, but even so, you'd find it higher than you might expect on my lists.
But remember, I'm talking favorites, not some sort of objective best.

Putting "Leaving This Town" on In Concert is one of the biggest head-scratchers for me. First, there are too many Holland songs on In Concert to begin with. Second, the song is too long and takes up valuable space. And, third, I don't think "Leaving This Town" is even a good song. I mean, of all the songs they could've chosen...I can appreciate some (maybe even a lot) of Blondie and Ricky's stuff, but I think "Leaving This Town" is the weakest.

I think "Here She Comes" is worse, though even that I think is OK. For me, the three Fataar/Chaplin penned songs go:
1. "Hold On, Dear Brother" 2. "Leaving This Town" (also C. Wilson and Love are cowriters here)
3. "Here She Comes"
And I think all three were good enough to make Beach Boys albums at the time. (As for inclusion on live albums, eh, I don't know. I don't really mind, mostly because live albums are novelties for me, and I almost never listen to them.)

Mona is one of maybe three or four songs off Love You that I really like. People talk about a certain charm that crazy-Brian has (not that, realistically speaking, it's a great thing to romanticize a mentally ill person's issues), and to me it is really shown here. The song is a single, simple four-chord progression repeated ad nauseum, but it has such a cool arrangement. And then the lyrics are just hilarious. It's very engaging. And its repetitious nature makes it almost like "the song that never ends." It's fun! It wouldn't work if it were 5 minutes long, but at a hair over 2 minutes, it's great.

Oh, I like it, but it's not a favorite by any means. It's not much of a song and Dennis' vocal is questionable. I've always been surprised that Brian gave the song to Dennis to sing. The song is very Brian, including the Phil Spector reference. There are some nice parts in the backing track but they're slightly buried. Maybe a better mix would've helped.
