I definitely associate [The Little Girl I Once Knew] with SDSN and, in particular, the two songs you later mentioned, "California Girls" and "Let Him Run Wild". ... What really torpedoes this single, though, is the pairing of it with a Party! track. These songs in NO WAY sound like they belong together. I don't disagree with this, by the way. When I say it sounds like Pet Sounds tracks, I mean it ... but I also don't think Pet Sounds is necessarily as sharp a departure from what came before it as is sometimes said. The two songs you mentioned above as comparisons, I agree. I don't think so either. I think the two albums of 1965 show a natural progression from the surf albums to Pet Sounds.

TLGIOK - I had to stop and think what that was! For a split second - only because I knew we'd just reviewed CG/LHRW. The Little Girl I Once Knew is a track that is always magic whenever it comes on. The thing modulates all over the place; the pauses; the group vocals - who actually is the lead singer on this one? Carl? Brian? Mike (split man!)? I like it fine as it is - a stand alone single. I don't see it belonging on any of the albums before it or after it. I rate it 9 - I docked it one point because the b-side means nothing to me. Hmm...that might be true of the next single, too. I don't remember what the b-side is!

I saw this quote from Brian about TLGIOK on Wikipedia:
In 1995, Wilson expressed, "It was a fine song, except the intro is the only good part of it, and the rest didn't sound so good. I thought the song in itself sucked. I didn't like the harmonies, I thought they were sour and off-key." Despite this, he later said that the song "should've" gotten more attention than it did.

I noticed that when doing my intro post. It would bug me if I took it seriously... The harmonies are less off key than more than a few recordings he's put out. There's nothing to bother with in that respect here. Just typically nonsensical BW interview fodder.
