Okay, I might be the only one who ends up participating in this, and that's O.K., but I thought I'd offer it up to all of you.
Here are the parameters:
- 15 songs in total
- 1 song per studio album (no live or compilation albums)
To make things a little easier - you get up to 2 exceptions.
Beyond that you can go in any direction you please. A playlist of your favorite songs, best songs, overlooked songs, etc. You can focus on one member or balance each members' contributions. The possibilities are endless. I ended up sticking with songs that I consider both among their absolute best as well as among my favorites. In other words, 10s across the board! I also wanted the playlist to flow well, and I think it does. Additionally, I was seeking to only include post-GV songs that I think match their earlier work both quality and production-wise, and that are consistent enough in sound. Quite frankly, there's not much that fits the bill (especially since I can only take one song per album!). "California" was the last cut. It has the sound - uptempo, fully produced, classic-sounding group harmonies. Anyway, I think I (err, the Beach Boys) succeeded. Listen to the transition from GV into "This Whole World". It is not jarring at all!
01 Surfin' USA - Surfin' USA
02 Little Deuce Coupe - Little Deuce Coupe
03 Surfer Girl - Surfer Girl
04 I Get Around - All Summer Long
05 Don't Worry Baby - Shut Down Vol. 2
06 Help Me Rhonda - Summer Days (and Summer Nights!!)
07 Please Let Me Wonder - The Beach Boys Today!
08 California Girls - Summer Days (and Summer Nights!!)
09 Wouldn't It Be Nice - Pet Sounds
10 Good Vibrations - Smiley Smile
11 This Whole World - Sunflower
12 Til Die - Surf's Up
13 Marcella - Carl & the Passions - So Tough
14 Do It Again - 20/20
15 Forever - Sunflower
As you can see, I used my two exceptions on "California Girls" and "Forever". The former, I just couldn't leave off, and I couldn't use the Today! version of "Help Me Rhonda". The latter, I wanted to include a Dennis vocal, but the group vocals, and especially Brian's falsetto is the perfect way to close out this playlist. Kind of a "what could have been" playlist, if Brian hadn't given up the production race.
Listening to this playlist sure put me in a good mood today.
