The topic seems straightforward enough, but it's really not. No bands/groups. Individuals only. Your 10 favorite music contributors of all time. Singers, musicians, writers, producers, etc. Likely, your favorites will have worn most of those hats (which, I think, increases the impact they have on us), but it could just be a fantastic songwriter or killer guitarist. In addition to performing their own material (and in some cases producing it), I found that length of career and diversity of material played a large role in determining who made my list and where they fell. For example, I'm sure Buddy Holly would have placed higher had his career not been tragically short. And, my toughest (and perhaps most foolish) omission is that of Elvis Presley. But, that's largely a result of the types of things I've already alluded to, and my perception that he's perhaps a little bit less of an "artist" than most of my other favorites. (Hopefully, whoever's reading this at least has a sense of what I mean by that, because I'm not sure I can explain it very well.)
Oh, by the way, don't try to be "fair" to the rest of the music world. This is your world. In mine, I seriously considered including Ringo, and therefore all four Beatles. That's how important and impactful their music is to me.
And, the top 4 truly are my Mount Rushmore. John, Paul, Brian, and Bob. Everyone else orbits them.
1. John Lennon 2. Paul McCartney 3. Brian Wilson 4. Bob Dylan 5. Tom Petty 6. Bruce Springsteen 7. George Harrison 8. Cat Stevens 9. Neil Young 10. Buddy Holly

This seems at first glance like so cliched a thread ... and then when you read what you've said, B.E., and think it through, you realize that's not true at all. Very difficult. I need to think about this, and it's fun to do so.

Yeah, I've been thinking about it for a few days now. So, no rush.

Great topic, B.E., and the no bands/no groups aspect makes it more interesting! Here's mine, in no specific order (that's impossible):
01 Jim Morrison 02 Ray Manzarek 03 Brian Wilson 04 Bob Dylan 05 Paul McCartney 06 Ron Mael (Sparks) 07 Frank Sinatra 08 Paul Simon 09 John Fogerty
10 Ray Davies
Mount Rushmore:

Here's mine, in no specific order (that's impossible): 01 Jim Morrison I considered Jim. He'd definitely be in my top 20. By the way, nice touch adding the photos of your Mount Rushmore. (Although, I was momentarily confused - that's a picture of Paul not Ray! Then I reread what I quoted above. ) Edit - I probably shouldn't be throwing words like "definitely" around. When you get beyond your top favorites, there's a lot of artists in contention.

The only one who would come close would be Brian Wilson.
I did want to make an Honorable Mention. I love The Rolling Stones, but I couldn't separate Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.

I thought Freddie would make your list! (Granted, I see yours is preliminary. )

I should have included Jimi Hendrix somewhere in the 5-7 range. I know I don't talk much about him now, but from ages 15-20 or so, I spent a LOT of time with Jimi.
