I agree entirely. But that's also why you'd HOPE they could hear Azoff's advice with fresh ears and put aside long-held opinions and squabbles. If the sale was about the band's legacy, let an informed, intelligent outside manage the band's legacy rather than insisting on doing things the way you've been doing them all along (in which case, why sell?)! That's why I'm actually pretty optimistic. Obviously Azoff knows his stuff, and hopefully Mike, Brian, and Al are smart enough to know that the end is far closer than the beginning, and it would be good to go out on a high note.

This may not have been recent, but I noticed the Beach Boys website homepage got a revamp with a new logo: www.thebeachboys.com/

I don't do Facebook or anything so I'm wondering if David has also registered some words of encouragement approval and acceptance of all this. I know Dave is not part of brother records or anything like that but His clearly part of the current reality of what we understand as The Beach Boys based on the triumphant reunion in 2012 so of course he would be involved and I just would like to hear if he has made any statement that way mike al and Brian have. I just assume that anything the boys do Bruce is part of of course.

I'd like to think he'd be included in any reunion talks, or involved in any documentaries. I hope that Blondie would also be included if there is a reunion this time around.

Blondie is among other things a wonderful performer and seems like a heck of a nice fellow and he so enjoys the boys. He would add authenticity to the great songs that he sang and played on and he can play guitar and percussion on other songs as well as just part of the beach boy orchestra. It's easy enough to distribute parts to players who wernt on the original records as part of an orchestra.

This move will be a big blow to The Haters. In the past, definitely Brian and probably Al and Carl's sons, too, didn't outvote Mike because they wanted to make as much money as they possibly could. Any harebrained ideas that bombed were automatically blamed on Mike, even though it/they had the blessing of the other guys. Now, going forward, while I'm sure Iconic/Azoff will bounce ideas off BRI, the final say will go to Iconic/Azoff. So, if/when we see some more doozies that make you scatch your head and ask "why?", who will The Haters devote their time to...hating?

Along the same lines, it will be interesting because anyone expecting this to mean "finally, things will go the right way" will be reminded ... there is no "right way."
Example, they talk about being a lifestyle brand, and I made some comments about that earlier in the thread. I hate that crap. But ... it might be "the right thing" for the band, for management, and for some section of the fans. For others, getting them together on the road is the right thing. For others, getting them in the studio. (Which guys? Under whose supervision and direction?) For others, some sort of rarities or archival stuff. And on and on.
So it has been easy-to-assume "There is a clear 'right way' [and it's what I have in mind], but [Mike/Brian/wives/incompetent managers] have prevented that from happening." If people agree Azoff's direction is smart, and it happens to be different than their own preferences, what does that mean? Is Azoff an idiot? Do I acknowledge my own biases and admit I'm just one fan? Etc.

This new focus on the legacy has me worried for the legacy.

There was a time when the lifestyle brand, merchandising, and stuff like that used to bother me. But, with people buying less and less tangible music, I think that's a good fiscal way to go with legacy artists. As long as it doesn't interfere with the right next step for Mike, Brian, Al, et al or the right documentary, or right archive release, I don't care. I"ll even buy a six pack of All Summer Long Summer Ale or bottle of Good Vibrations Wine.

I try to just ignore it, to be honest. Because I 100% agree that it's good business sense for some artists, assuming it's well conceived and executed. I think I'm as sympathetic to working musicians as anyone--probably because I've been friends with enough working musicians to understand their lives. (I don't mean Beach Boys, I mean John or Jane who plays in three working bands who might be signed and cut albums, but are indies and have day jobs, too, taking PTO to go on tour, etc.)
But that said, I personally hate it. It just feels gross, and especially when we're talking about people of that level. (It's still good business sense, though!)
Would I drink a Full Sail Ale? Or a Goin' South Whisky? Put a fat, jumpsuited, bearded Carl on the label and you bet i would!
EDIT - I missed, but cannot stress enough now, your point about this as long as it doesn't interfere with the legit, music-related stuff. As long as they nail that stuff, the rest is generally irrelevant to my life.

I think my opinion on branding and merchandising also changed in the late 00s when Land Shark Island Lager (a Margaritaville beer) became one of my favorite summer beers.

EDIT - I missed, but cannot stress enough now, your point about this as long as it doesn't interfere with the legit, music-related stuff. As long as they nail that stuff, the rest is generally irrelevant to my life. To this point and other music-related points above...There was a time, long ago (in the 70's) and for decades after that, where BRI and Capitol Records dropped the ball as far as archival projects were concerned. We got some 2fers, a couple of boxed sets, and a live album (Knebworth). Eventually we even got most of the solo albums on CD. Not disastrous but it could've been...better. Recently, over the last decade or so, things really did start to improve with another boxed set, The Smile Sessions, and the fairly recent Smiley Smile/Wild Honey/Friends/20/20 collections. And, hopefully, Feel Flows will continue that trend.
What I'm trying to say is that things haven't really been that bad the last decade or so, and other than some archival live/concert things, I don't know what more we could've expected. I mean, each year or two we should expect these 50 year/copyright protection projects, but we would've gotten them anyway - Azoff or no Azoff. Now, maybe the marketing will be improved. THAT was pretty bad, but how many more units will be sold with better marketing? These are The Beach Boys we're talking about, and other than the surf & turf stuff, they're a tough sell.

That's kind of what my point was about Jonah and Justyn's comments: things have actually been (relatively) good since they were around!
I do think there are opportunities for improvement, though. Even something like the still imminent Feel Flows is a great example. I'm thrilled it's happening, but the self-inflicted wound of its bungled release should not have happened. Or making a big deal about some event that turns out to be a stupid, vapid interview? (I forget what that was for, but it was post-C50. Some dumb reunion interview.) "Hey everybody, want to see us get your hopes up only to under-deliver!? Check this out!"
Make a plan; execute on the plan. Not this plan, semi-announce, rumor and innuendo, infighting, delays, etc., that make internet gossip explode. There will always be some disappointment, some gossip, and so on, but you don't have to step in it every single time.

Another botched opportunity was with the live documents from 2012. Instead of a full two plus hour concert film, we got a film that would've seemed short even in the days of truncated concerts being released on VHS. And possibly the worst sounding officially released live album I've ever heard.
