I wonder if the event being on cable TV instead of public TV is why they were able to lure some bigger named acts this year.

Correction: Mike, Bruce, and Stamos!
Glad they'll keep their tradition alive ... and sad that the story is put in CNN's politics section! I suppose a holiday about the founding of the country is political in a sense, but come on! How does this not just go in their entertainment section?

These cable news networks along with various partisan social media sites are so hell bent on dividing this country that they've made the very act of celebrating the Fourth of July divisive (or at least created the illusion that it's somehow divisive).

But little did they understand Mike and Bruce had the secret weapon, the ultimate unifier, John Stamos.

But little did they understand Mike and Bruce had the secret weapon, the ultimate unifier, John Stamos. Maybe all this Country needs is for Uncle Jessie to sit us down and tell us some important life sessions as the "Full House 3rd Act Life Session" music swells in the background. Then, he'll cap it all off by playing drums on a rousing rendition of Be True to Your School.

Without sounding hokey and Mike Love-like, I think the country could use the Beach Boys and some good vibrations right about now. They usually come off reasonably well on those 4th Of July specials. Looking forward to it! Susie Cincinnati got a groovy little motor car...

I think that Dave is playing with Dean and the surf city all stars for a special private 4th of July celebration in Pennsylvania that day if I'm remembering the tour dates from the search city all stars page correctly.
I wonder what Brian and Dave and Al think of John stamos? I think John has done the best he can to keep The Beach Boys public and known and I'll bet that his work has kept their sales meaningful and help to keep them popular in many markets

Think about it. And, he's been doing it for over 35 years.

Looking forward to it! Susie Cincinnati got a groovy little motor car... I agree. I wish they got a bigger slot, or even did a full show like in the 1980s, but they have to make it tight for TV. Although, I can't imagine this thing gets big ratings.

I re-read the advertisement for the 4th of July special on CNN, and I originally didn't take notice to the other guests appearing on the show:
Chicago...maybe "Saturday In The Park"...I think it was the 4th of July Foreigner...didn't know they were still around Kool & The Gang...I'm not expecting "Jungle Boogie" but how about "Celebration" REO Speedwagon...wtf? I guess they have a couple hit singles to choose from Sammy Hagar & The Circle...I don't have a clue, but I hope Sammy mentions Eddie Susanna Hoffs...What? No Bangles? Maybe a solo "Walk Like An Egyptian"?

It's a very lackluster performance and as I said on another discussion board it's time to reunite with the original members and rehearse a great show with good musical directors and stop giving over entire songs karaoke style to other voices. I don't care if it's Alan's children or Mike's children. Original singers or at least original members sing as many of the parts as possible. While The Beach Boys are alive no tribute bands no karaoke .

I watched the 4th Of July performance last night on CNN. A few comments...
First, the live mix was terrible which was unfortunate because all of the other artists appearing on the show around the country sounded fine. You couldn't hear all of the instruments, especially the guitars, and that took the guts out of the music. Also, the vocals were mixed really low. It gave the performance a lackluster feeling.
Mike's vocals were not especially good, but I didn't think they were terrible either. Yes, I've heard him stronger but he was the typical "Mike" that we've been hearing over the last ten or so years, slightly weak(er) but still sounding like the familiar-voiced Mike Love of The Beach Boys.
I thought the other vocals including the backgrounds were fine, but again, you had to struggle to hear them. I just kept saying to myself, "Would somebody please turn it up!"
I usually have no problem with John Stamos, but yes, he was driving me crazy with his running all over the stage. If he would've just stood at a mic with his guitar...He didn't talk and he didn't sing much either.
I was slightly surprised that they didn't tailor the set to the TV broadcast, or maybe they did. It appeared that they just picked up things where the concert was at in Florida. It was a little awkward starting out with "God Only Knows" and THEN going into "California Girls". The usual "Sloop John B" into "Wouldn't It Be Nice" was good, but I thought "God Only Knows" would've worked better AFTER that. I was also surprised that they didn't rock out more, performing "I Get Around", "Surfin' U.S.A.", or "Fun, Fun, Fun", but then they would've had to alter the concert setlist (but so what?).
Again, the TV broadcast came off a little lackluster or laid back, but still nice. How could they lose with those songs; a few are the greatest pop songs in history. It did lack energy, though Bruce tried his best to get the crowd into it. The CNN hosts, Dana Bash and Don Lemon were very enthusiastic with their praise. Dana even pointed out (incorrectly) that Christian Love was Mike Love's son (that part was right) and provided the falsetto vocal parts. I watched much of the CNN show and I think The Beach Boys did not appear out of place with the other artists, including some rap and hip hop performers. The Beach Boys' music is always going to sound good on a 4th Of July evening.

At least from that clip posted, I'd blame the sound more than the performance. As Sheriff John Stone noted, the balance is terrible. Nothing the group can do about that.
As for handing off leads, I don't agree that it has to stay in the family. That said we all know the band is going to be coming together sooner than later anyway, though we don't know for how much or how long. (Tribute show(s), so probably mostly guest artists and then a short set at the end.)
