While my memory is always suspect, the version of Love & Mercy is from the post-tsunami fundraiser, right? I believe it was live on a soundstage, but maybe not in front of an audience, which would explain the good quality recording.
No particular preference as far as including it or not. It falls into middle territory for me: it definitely isn't a "live recording" in the typical "feel the excitement!" sense, but it is a live recording.

That sounds vaguely familiar.

Wow, I knew the Beach Boys covered themselves a lot, but seeing them all stacked up together, the list is actually longer than I'd imagined. Yeah, that was my main motivation. The topic comes up a lot, but then I started to wonder just how many there are. At some point I might actually count them up, determine which songs were covered the most (and by who), calculate the frequency of self covers, etc. Although, and sorry to be that guy, I don't think the version of Love and Mercy on the Super Deluxe NPP counts as it's a live version. Oh, don't be sorry. I didn't post this as a definitive list, rather I was hoping you guys would weigh-in. I had a feeling it was a live recording, and that I shouldn't include it, but initially I had forgotten its origin. And, it's such a clean recording without any audience noise that I've always kind of heard it as a studio recording. It's also not presented as a live performance by including "(live)" in the title. Neil Young's done that a lot. He'd include live performances on studio albums alongside studio recordings and you wouldn't really know the difference (e.g. "The Needle And The Damage Done" from Harvest). Anyway, it is a live recording, so I will remove it. (Unless someone else wants to make a counter argument?) You probably could include the 1975 version of In the Back of My Mind that was included on the NPP Deluxe Deluxe version.

Is it this version on the album? The album version is brighter and Brian's singing is a bit better pitchwise, but that could have been adjusted after the fact in production. He does say "news comes on TV" instead of "came on TV" in both. But I've only listened to about 45 seconds of each, not any kind of careful consideration.

I remember at one time thinking they used the same version that plays over the credits at the end of L&M but the vocals on that one are slightly different too.

Actually I'm pretty sure it's this version, which wasn't live. It was indeed related to tsunami relief, but as part of the "Walking Down the Path of Life" single.

If that's the case, then I stand corrected. I'll blame my thinking that the track was live on either the BW Board or SSMB which I frequented at the time that NPP was released.

It certainly has a vaguely live feel to it, presumably because that single was completed in one day with a bared-down band. But based on the quality Brian's lead voice, I'd guess at least that was the product of multiple takes, etc. (Which, as my earlier post said, was definitely stronger than he did in the live version from the same time.)
Frankly I'm just glad I'm not the only one with a fading memory...

As the memory bank gets more and more full, it's hard to retain the details of another version of a song that was included as a bonus track on a deluxe version of an album which already had three bonus tracks.

Sure a lot of remakes there - and the remakes really pile up when you get into the solo years. "So exactly why was it that I wanted to go solo? Oh yeah, so I could sing the same songs I sang with the group!"

Yeah, it's definitely that version, but I'm still not 100% sure if it's entirely a studio recording or if it's a doctored live/soundstage performance. Isn't Brian singing pretty prominently in the backing vocals? Anyway, not important, just a continual source of confusion on my end. I'll keep it on the list.

You probably could include the 1975 version of In the Back of My Mind that was included on the NPP Deluxe Deluxe version. As it's just a demo, and wasn't released for 40 years, I think I'll keep it off the main list. But, what I might do is include these "near-misses" at the bottom of the list. After all, the main purpose of a list such as this is to be used as a reference. So, it would be useful to include them, too.

BUMP
I'm not sure if this counts, but how about Drive In?
Granted, it wasn't released until a 1991 reissue of The Christmas Album, but there's the alternate version of Little Saint Nick with the Drive In backing track.

Where was Brian Wilson's "Sunshine" ( Imagination) originally? I was just thinking of KTSA, but that's not similar enough, is it? I should probably remove it from the list. Totally different song. Not a re-recording.
