Pitchfork published its review of Kacey Musgraves' star-crossed, due out tomorrow. It's a tempered 7.7, a respectable score that seems higher than the review itself might indicate. It's lower than her two previous studio albums (not counting Christmas novelties), which got 8.7 and 8.0, respectively.
I'm going to listen later today.

It's a very mellow sounding album, not quite what I was expecting. I enjoyed it overall, but still like Golden Hour more.

I'm just getting to it now, on the fifth song at the moment. Very mellow. I suspect it'll be a nice one to listen to in headphones late at night, especially in a not quite sober state. Seems good to me, but I don't want to comment too much yet, since I haven't even listened to it once all the way through.

The never-released David Bowie album Toy, dating from 2001, is set for release in late November. The album was quickly recorded live in the studio and includes both then-new songs and remakes of some older, lesser known ones. Bowie wanted to release it quickly after it was completed, but his label balked (possibly being the impetus for him leaving EMI for Columbia).
This version of the album is part of a massive box, because of course it is.
Here is the leadoff single.

My favorite 21st Century band - Ghost - have released their first new song in over three years, to be included on the soundtrack to the upcoming Halloween Kills. Wow, a new song for a soundtrack. That takes me back. ultimateclassicrock.com/ghost-hunters-moon/

I had a few minutes so I watched the video. It is pretty good and I can relate to the message. What struck me about the song and the video is how old(er) Bruce and John looked. They are both in their 70's now (Mellencamp in a few days) and I guess they are now, whether they want it or not , the new "old guard", that group of 70-somethings that used to include Wilson, Davies, McCartney, The Stones, CSN&Y, Dylan, Willie, and others. Now, it's their turn to show us how to keep rocking into the twilight. Not that I'm writing those other old warriors off quite yet...

Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp together. Wow, it's like seeing a can of Coca-Cola next to Sam's Choice Cola.

Former Judas Priest guitarist KK Downing releases the debut album from KK's Priest today.
I'm actually tempted to buy a CD now just in case there's a lawsuit with his former band. I'm actually a little surprised Priest's management hasn't taken legal action, considering the band is obviously using the Priest name (along with former Priest singer Ripper Owens, and even referencing Judas Priest songs on songtitles like "Return of the Sentinel.))
I guess without the "Judas," he can use it, but since fans, peers, and writers all tend to refer to Judas Priest as simply "Priest," I'm surprised no issues have arisen.

Roger Taylor, best known as the drummer from Queen, released a new solo album last week. While it's in the Top 5 in the UK and on the charts in Europe generally, I had not even known it was released.
The first two songs on it sound to me like nothing so much as Blackstar-era Bowie.

Silk Sonic, the soul-funk-pop project from Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak, announced their album will be released Nov. 12, which is a couple months earlier than previous comments indicated.
I've always found both of the principals to be talented but frustrating in their music, just in terms of how it relates (or more often than not, doesn't relate) to my taste. But this group's first songs, while a bit close to pastiche, have been a lot of fun as well as really good musically. Modern soul music that sounds like the stuff of the '60s and '70s? I'll take it!

Animal Collective announced a new album, Time Skiffs, to be released Feb. 4, 2022, and released the first song from it, "Prester John." You can find it at the link above or on youtube.
It's fine. I would skip the first minute of build-up, and heavily edit the remaining five-and-a-half minutes. But there are some cool things in it. I'm just not an Animal Collective fan, honestly. (I think some people here are, though. I forget.)

Parquet Courts' new album, Sympathy For Life, was released today. I heard of them for the first time in 2016, with their Human Performance album. I liked it a lot, with the Jonathan Richmanesque vocals, smart lyrics, and a sort of modern punk (but not punk) aesthetic. I liked their more polished Wide Awake! from '18 as well, and so was excited to learn they had an album on the way this year.
After one listen, I am disappointed. The best song seems to be the first one they released in advance of the album a few months back, "Walking at a Downtown Pace." The rest of it doesn't have ... something. I'll need a few more listens to put my finger on it. Softer? Less guitar? More beat-focused? It feels less like a band and more like a modern pop production.
