If they would've included a two-minute tribute song for Eddie, which song would've been the best? Because we're talking about Eddie, and not the band Van Halen, I'd lean toward "Eruption." There are plenty of guys, some of whom are notable, who could do it justice. Whether Steve Vai, Dweezil Zappa, or even a pop guy like John Mayer, there are options. Wolfgang was apparently offered the chance to play Eruption, but he declined. But, at the end of the day, I can see why a lot of people were pissed about what appeared to be a slight, but in actuality, this is just another example of The Grammys and their history of utter cluelessness and ignorance when it comes to hard rock music.

Yes, I agree with you that in the end it's kind of irrelevant just because the show sucks so much, and has for so long. (Not to say there aren't cool performances from time to time. There are!) For the most part, it's just so limited in its scope and even more in its imagination ... so screw it.
At a certain point, you have to stop trying to join the club that has repeatedly closed its doors to you and all but put up signs saying KEEP OUT.
In a way it's fitting that it's legitimate rock and roll (including hard rock, heavy metal, aggressive music) that is excluded, because that kind of music almost ought not have a black-tie sort of fancy establishment ceremony in the first place. I mean, the chief burnout at the local high school doesn't win prom king: the quarterback or class president does.

I don't know if they still do it, but Metal Hammer used to do the Golden Gods awards, which was an award show solely devoted to hard rock and heavy metal.

The last thing I'll say about the Van Halen controversy at the 2021 Grammys is that people will still be talking about Eddie's work long after many of the performers and winners have faded into obscurity.

Wolfie's debut single in advance of his first album, a tribute to his dad. Apparently this is more "ballady" than is representative of him. (Can't say it sounds particularly ballady to me. And honestly, it's pretty dull in my opinion.) He does everything from writing to all the instruments, which is cool. But really underwhelming to me.
So, I got into Christmas mode and completely forgot about this song. I finally heard it in full yesterday. I wish I liked it. But, it sounds like any random mid paced song from any anonymous 2000s era grunge light band. I don't want to be too harsh since this is Wolfie's tribute to his father, but.......man.

Funny you revived this, because my brother asked me at our family Easter celebration whether I'd heard it, and what I thought of it. I haven't listened to it since I posted it here almost half a year ago now, but I remembered enough to tell him my answer: not impressed.

I almost feel guilty for not liking it. Which is odd because I really don't feel that way about the music of any other offspring of my musical heroes.

On the one year anniversary of Eddie's death, I finally decided to listen to Wolfgang's album.
There were some good musical moments on the album, but as I'd feared after hearing Distance, this album just sounds like cookie cutter 21st century American radio rock.

Bumping the VH thread as there has been talk about a Van Halen tribute tour, possibly with the likes of Joe Satriani and Jason Newsted, along with David Lee Roth and Alex Van Halen. ultimateclassicrock.com/joe-satriani-van-halen-tribute-tour/Satriani is no stranger to the VH camp, playing with Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony in the supergroup Chickenfoot. It's an interesting idea.

Satch is an interesting choice on guitar. He is a technical master, but despite a lot of similarities--from tapping virtuosity to a predilection for the boogie--he also comes across as a little "straight" for an EVH replacement. His playing doesn't have what strikes me as a natural groove, but a studied one.
I'd actually say his one-time student (and former EVH "replacement" with Roth) Steve Vai would be the better choice, with a more fluid and humorous feel in addition to the technical brilliance.
That said, Satriani is a great choice. Interesting that they wouldn't include Anthony (if he's interested). The Hagar comments are also a little vague.

I suspect Satriani kept those comments intentionally vague and he still has bit of a stake in Camp Hagar (there are occasionally talks of a Chickenfoot reunion). The lack of Mikey continues to be disappointing.

An interesting and touching article about a fan who corresponded via Email with Eddie Van Halen:

David Lee Roth released a new live-in-the-studio version of a Van Halen song, "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love." It is one of 14 songs he and a band reportedly cut in just a few hours back in May.
