Then I’m REALLY the oddball, because while I do like Brian’s quirkier music a lot of the time, I don’t much like Funky Pretty. My issue with it is the sound, though. I’ve always thought it was muddy, either poorly engineered or mixed. I’d be curious whether some reissue eventually could bring out some sonic clarity from it, or whether that’s just how it sounds. The song itself? It’s OK. Too long for what it is. For some reason, I thought FP topped out around six minutes (it's just 4:13). Maybe it just feels that long to me. Meanwhile, Leaving This Town is almost six minutes long, and I would gladly take an extra minute or two.

Yeah I don’t have some set number for length, but just based on the content of FP, it FEELS 6 minutes, feels too long.

Personally I think Leaving This Town could have had some time shaved off it. But not that ending... the best part of the song. What a tease. I wish it had more of that in it.

I get where he's coming from, but I still dig it. Kinda funny how he seems to have no recollection of any VDP involvement whatsoever.

I wasn't expecting such an enthused response. Love it!

I know I've said it elsewhere, but in the TLOS show here, he went on for probably a minute, maybe more, about how much he hated the song. It was actually pretty awkward; Jeff F. even said "you know, Brian, we don't have to do it if you don't want to..."
I believe Brian's words were that "it's a bullshit lyric." Something like that. But it was similar. "I hate this song." Etc. The guys in the band were looking at one another, like, ummm...

Holland [Brother/Reprise, 1972] I admit that this sounds real good--it's engineered clear and bright as a redwood mountain stream--but to overlook what's doing the sounding is formalism as deliberate stupidity. That is, the actual music and words are murky and dim. I suppose that in time their tongue-tied travelogue of Big Sur may seem no more escapist than "Fun Fun Fun," but who'll ever believe it's equally simple, direct, or innocent? C

Inspired by the 'Single of the Week' thread, I ended up listening to Holland a few times this week. What really struck me was how strong Side 1 is. The sequencing is sublime. And, I really do enjoy each and every track. It got me thinking that this might be one of the best LP sides the Beach Boys ever put out (not including compilations, of course). I think both sides of Pet Sounds and Today! are stronger. But, after that, it's right up there. Maybe I'll take Side 1 of All Summer Long over it, and there's a few others in contention, but side 1 of Holland is really a work of art.
Edit: I even got an impressed..."hey, who is this?" when "Big Sur" was playing. (Which, by the way, I'm pretty confident I prefer to the earlier version. Both great, but I just really love the album version - both on its own and as part of the Saga.)
