The most surreal example is probably the VU's "Sister Ray", where after some stops and starts Mo Tucker doubles the tempo (at about 6:42), when there's a whole ten minutes to go, folks.
After Lou lurches into the reprise, Mo even corrects herself, waiting half a beat at 16:11 to get in step with him. You could do that in those days (apparently):
