I think it's important to remember this could be released on December 20th and it would be "on time." Although it would benefit them to release it at least a few weeks before Christmas. I'm not ready to get my pitchfork out yet.

1. Why the holdup? I was speculating COVID, Edelson/Stebbins apparently indicate it's intraband squabbles. However, there is also
2. Is it still going to come out? Regardless of what the reason is, it still seems highly unlikely that it wouldn't come out. At the very least, the copyright extension aspect applies to some of it. And what's more, the sunk cost of everything already done would make you think the label will insist on recouping.
So no pitchforks here regardless of the details. Frustration, maybe. Disappointment. A certain amount of "wtf, why does this always happen!?" gallows humor. But no pitchforks.

I guess one question would be how much of it needs to be released this year? There is the obvious stuff like Big Sur, My Solution, Seasons in the Sun, etc. How much could still be released while making a boxset still viable in 2021?

Yes, that is exactly my thinking re the copyright stuff. Because obviously much (most?) of what is released will be remixes, etc., that aren't really covered.
That said, those are the things I want the most! I don't really need a remastered version of "Feel Flows," but I really want high quality releases of whatever hasn't yet been officially released.

And by the way, your return is especially welcomed now that you mentioned a couple more tracks that are likely to be included that I'd forgotten when we were discussing the still-unreleased material we know of: My Solution and Seasons in the Sun.

That's one of the things I'm afraid of, considering it's being called a "box" unlike Party/Unplugged and Sunshine Tomorrow. I'd hate to have to think about buying three discs of remixes just to get one or two discs of material that's not been officially released.

In my opinion, if completed, EVERY Beach Boys' album should be released in the spring or by Memorial Day at the latest. This boxed set is no exception, ESPECIALLY with the pandemic when more music was desired while people were self-quarantining. So, The Beach Boys being The Beach Boys, of course they would target the release...for the fall.
I'll go back to my above point. If what we read earlier in the year about a targeted fall release is true (and ESQ and Mark Linett have pretty good reputations don't they?), then there is still time to hit that targeted date. Technically, they have until the end of the year due to the copyright laws, don't they?
I'm just gonna say it. I'm sure Edelson contributed to Feel Flows, but I'm not taking everything he says as gospel. I'll leave it at that. And, just because Stebbins insinuates that COVID-19 is not to blame doesn't make it true either. I'm not panicking yet, and it wouldn't surprise me if the delay - if in fact there is a delay - probably is due to the pandemic. Haven't we all seen the many, many ways the pandemic is affecting everything?
EDIT: Some of my points echo The Cincinnati Kid and Kapitan's points that they just made a few minutes ago. Sorry, I type slow!

Without really thinking hard, I am going to bet that we're looking at fewer than half a dozen songs that haven't been officially released yet. Then some number of live performances of the material, maybe a couple dozen songs. And then a few discs of remixes ranging from dramatic (e.g. vocals only, track only, or dramatically different in some other way) to slight (remastered but basically identical).

Based on convo the other day and TCK's comment above, what are the songs we know of that are likely to see their first official release here?
- Big Sur (original version)
- Carnival / Over the Waves - My Solution - Seasons in the Sun

It does seem like summer 2020 would've been an ideal time for a release, considering how many are home bound this year. But, a lot of releases were delayed, I guess because of shortage with distributors and such.
If we're generously talking about a dozen unreleased songs, and discs of remixes, then, sad to say, that's not really going to move the needle for me, and I'd probably just opt to listen to it on Spotify.

While I'm definitely looking forward to this boxed set, I'm not expecting to be blown away, and I don't expect it to be ANOTHER game changer. There haven't been ANY game changers with The Beach Boys since 1966. The same thing was said (by Edelson mostly) about the Sunshine Tomorrow releases. While that set is nice and I'm absolutely grateful it came out, it barely caused a ripple in the music community.

I think it's far too late in the game for any kind of real game changer for The Beach Boys. If the release of Smile / Smile Sessions didn't, nothing will. At the end of the day, the FF release will come out. The diehards will buy it, and love it. Then, next summer, Sounds of Summer and maybe Pet Sounds, re-enter the top 100 again.

I think if the set comes in at under $50, I'm probably going to buy it no matter what. Buying the physical box makes future releases more likely, imo. Some of the remixes may be legitimately good, too. A lot of stuff on Sunshine Tomorrow certainly sounded way better that before. They should have done the same with Friends based on what I heard on the 68 set.

But keep in mind that one reason Sunshine Tomorrow was so revelatory even on the remixes was that Wild Honey hadn't been released in stereo before. That's not the case for the albums in question on Feel Flows.

But, I've kind of checked out on expensive box sets as my time to listen to, and disposable income to spend on, music have both decreased in the last few years. I just can longer justify spending $50-$100 on a boxset that I'm likely going to listen to once before putting it in the pile.
