B.E. posted that list of music questions the other day, and one was how you feel when you hear new acts are going to cover one of your old favorites? While I am excited by it, there is no question that sometimes covers work out pretty badly.

Because I care too much about the posters of this group, I'll not post the YouTube clips, but here is a short list of terrible, terrible covers.
Mariah Carey - Bringing on the Heartbreak (Def Leppard) - Typical of Mariah's overblown squealing.
Shinedown - Simple Man (Lynyrd Skynyrd) - One of the many faceless grunge lite bands from the 00s do an acoustic version of a southern rock classic. It might actually be tolerable if not for the horrid over yarling.
Limp Bizkit - Behind Blue Eyes (The Who) - The Who? No. Why?
Five Finger Death Punch - Bad Company (Bad Company) - The ultimate bro metal band tackles a 70s classic rock staple. It ain't pretty.
Black Label Society - A Whiter Shade of Pale (Procol Harum) - It would be really easy to fill this list with terrible bands, but let's include a few terrible covers from good bands. Zakk makes the same mistake Shinedown made, by oversinging on a stripped down version of a classic.
Disturbed - Sound of Silence (Simon & Garfunkel) - Disturbed is one of the few bands that came out of the nu metal movement that I actually kind of liked. But, their version of SOS is overwrought nonsense.
Guns N Roses - Sympathy for the Devil (The Rolling Stones) - OK, it's not terrible, but it's not very good or inspired either. To date, it's basically the dying breath of a short reign by a great band.
I could go on and on and on if I included Christmas songs or late career covers albums.

I know I've mentioned David Bowie's cover of God Only Knows before, but since it might be the worst cover of all time, it bears repeating. I'll take a page from the book of KDS and not post the link.
Over the weekend (I'm aware that it's Thursday now, but I'm on vacation, so the weekend ended yesterday) I heard a horrific cover of Depeche Mode's Enjoy the Silence by Matthew Good. Aptly named, because I definitely enjoy silence more than that musical disaster.
Queen drummer Roger Taylor's cover of Springsteen's Racing in the Street. Ick.
And I know it was a big hit for them and this is probably an unpopular opinion, but I've always hated Pearl Jam's cover of Last Kiss.

Actually, Last Kiss is probably the only Pearl Jam song I kind of like.
I thought of a good one. Early in their career, Judas Priest did some great covers of Diamonds and Rust (Joan Baez) and The Green Manalishi (Fleetwood Mac). But, their 1988 cover of Johnny B Goode is beyond terrible.

I'm sure I'd be OK with Pearl Jam's "Last Kiss" if not for Eddie Vedder. But that's a big ask from Pearl Jam!
Here are two from my early adolescence that I hated then and now.
Cheap Trick, "Don't Be Cruel." I hate the background vocals as much as (or more than) anything else I've ever hated in my life, especially in the sickening slide of their "ooooh" (which sounds more like "ehhhh") at about 1:34.
And from a few years prior, off the not-very-good Come Out and Play, a somewhat embarrassing cover of "Leader of the Pack." The background vocals again are the biggest turnoff. It's like a bad high school production of Grease or something.

I completely forgot about Leader of the Pack.

I completely forgot about Leader of the Pack. The thing is, I think Dee Snider actually did a pretty good job of it! But everything else about the recording is so kitschy as to be parody...which coming from Twisted Sister is really saying something!

Halford gives it a good go, but it sounds very much like a novelty.

I'm a big Bob Dylan fan, and I especially appreciate that he never forgot his musical roots and the artists who influenced him. But for someone who recorded quite a few covers in his career including entire albums, Dylan recorded more than his share of clunkers.
