Featuring two former Byrds, Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman, I've been obsessing over a few songs from The Flying Burrito Brothers' debut album, The Gilded Palace of Sin. Nearly every day, to and from work, for about a week and a half, I've been listening (and passionately singing along ) to "Do Right Woman", "Dark End of the Street", "Hot Burrito #1", and "Hot Burrito #2". Now, these have always been my favorites of theirs, but the more I listen the more I like 'em! They are really fun to sing. I'm tempted to make such a thread, but I'm not sure exactly how to approach it. Anyway, before I zero-in on "Do Right Woman", I just want to say that I did, on one trip, listen to the rest of the album, and while it's all good stuff, the aforementioned tracks are definitely my favorite. The only questionable one is the closer, "Hippie Boy". I kinda like how they end the album with everyone singing "There'll Be Peace (In The Valley)", but if there were a way to tell that story in 40 seconds as opposed to 4 minutes, I'd certainly prefer it. One thing that I had forgotten about the rest of the album, though, is how great the harmony singing is. As much as Gram takes center stage, there's very nice background singing throughout. Two-part harmony, specifically. Very affecting. One thing that I adore about "Do Right Woman" is how, in the refrain, the second "all" (as in "all night man") is elongated. That, combined with the descending melody, really emphasizes the meaning of the lyrics. It's a long sigh, reflecting the long night. I just listened to Aretha's version and she doesn't elongate the second "all". (It also occurred to me that the lyric "they say that it's a man's world, but you can't prove that by me" loses a lot of impact, for me, when not sung from a man's perspective - as the meaning totally changes.) I think I'll listen again...so, so good...

The Burritos' third, self-titled album is a great favourite of my wife's (she has it on vinyl). This is the closing track: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Flying_Burrito_Bros_(album)

Oh, here's another chance for a rant. I resent how Gram Parsons has become another one of those guys that is worshipped because he died young. There's a lot of younger fans who couldn't tell you the names of any of the Byrds, but they know Gram Parsons. I used to think Gene Clark was overrated, compared to McGuinn. I've changed my mind about that, although McGuinn was always captain of the ship, and certainly a more stable personality than Clark. But as far as the King of Country Rock thing, sheesh, the Lovin' Spoonful were doing that back in 65-66. A lot of what Zalman Yanovsky was doing on the guitar was trying to replicate Floyd Cramer's "slip note" piano technique. There's country sounding songs on their first couple albums. And what the fuck do people think the Everly Brothers were doing in the 50s and 60s? Country was always a big part of their sound. Rick Nelson recorded a couple of country albums in 66/67 before forming the Stone Canyon Band. Michael Nesmith was injecting country sounds into the Monkees right from the beginning. But these days, the average rock snob thinks country rock started with Gram Parsons and the Eagles. Don Henley and his buddies are playing stadiums, while Richie Furay is playing tiny little places. BTW, RIP Rusty Young.

I am wholly unfamiliar with Roger McGuinn's solo career, but today I had some exposure first through a youtube interview, then looking up a few things, at which point I was surprised to learn that Bruce Johnston played piano and sang harmonies on a song on McGuinn's 1973 self-titled solo debut.

Interesting. I hadn't heard of this, or Bruce's involvement. I'll have to check this album out. What a scary album cover!

Hold up, is that Charles Lloyd on the sax!? How have I not heard about this on the BBs boards? Maybe I did, and forgot. That falsetto part sounds more like the Beach Boys than the Beach Boys did at the time. This would have been just after he was kicked out of the group, I think. (I hate to say it as a BBs fan, but I'm just not a fan of Charles Lloyd's style. Stay away!)

I had a similar response yesterday: how had I never heard of this? Somewhat surprisingly, it wasn't on AGD's Bellagio site (which probably explains why I hadn't heard of it, anyway), though I did send a tip to him yesterday about it.

Anyone know of a good Byrds forum or website? What I'm really looking for is something like "The Definitive Vocal Credits List" thread at SSMB.

There was a mention nine years ago at Hoffman about a Byrds forum on Yahoo called Byrdmaniax but I can't find it for the life of me. Mind you, nine years in cyberspace is a long time...

I'm thinking the answer might be in an old Hoffman thread. I'll report back if I find anything (there or elsewhere).
