I'll get the ball rolling in this new section.
I suppose if you're going to start a Beach Boys DVD collection, the 1998 Endless Harmony documentary is a good place to start. Running at just under two hours, the doc features commentary from all of the bandmembers (even Dennis and Carl who'd passed on by the time it was released) telling their story.
Granted, it does feel like some parts of the story get rushed (ie. the Blondie / Ricky era), but for what it is, it's a good starting point for anyone interesting in the history of the band.
I would've liked a second disc of full performances (in general, I prefer to keep full performances / videos and the actual narrative part somewhat separate), but five performance clips are included as a bonus feature - the Steve Allen clip of the Boys in their sailor outfits, two songs from the Lost Concert of 1964, and the promo films for Sloop John B and Friends.

I forgot this section was being created!
I agree, this is the Beach Boys documentary to see, if you only get to see one. It's far from perfect, and far too short, but it's really good. I learned a lot from it, being a new fan when I first saw it a year or two after it was released. Several songs used in it were totally new to me: The Night Was So Young, Been Too Long, to name two.

I keep telling myself I need to see this one. I've only watched the 2012 documentary, but that was more of a brief overview.

I'm pretty sure I first heard All I Wanna Do on the EH doc. I bought the Sunflower / Surf's Up two fer soon after.

Documentaries are the one form of BB's content that I've seen very little of - basically whatever I've been able to find on youtube. Last time I checked, Endless Harmony wasn't there (or wasn't available in my country, grumble grumble).

Saturday was a second consecutive night of the guilty pleasure of getting an opportunity to rewatch a Beach Boys-related movie, as my guest liked Love & Mercy enough to want to watch a documentary to see the real people and some of the first-hand accounts. I, again, tried to keep my mouth shut and let her form her own opinions.
(For the record: she found Mike annoying, said he seemed insecure and overly defensive. Also found it funny that the "Sloop John B" video had been recreated in the L&M movie, a connection she had not known in seeing the remake in the movie until seeing the doc.)
I think it's the first time I watched EH that I thought it seemed old. 1998 hadn't seemed that long ago when I watched it in the early 00s, the late 00s, even the 10s ... but you know, in 2024, the looks, the clothes, and maybe in some cases even the narratives, seemed outdated. That, of course, isn't a criticism of the film, just a comment on perspective and the passage of time.

Its funny you mention the "old" look of EH. I actually thought it looked "old" when I first saw it in 2012.
For a documentary that, at the time, was only 14 years old, the picture quality of the DVD was not very sharp, and it almost felt like a direct transfer of a worn video tape.
