Speaking of events that gave the band a short, immediate shot in the arm, but didn't really last or move the needle with their legacy.....the 2012 reunion. The Beach Boys released their first album in 20 years, and played to their biggest audiences in decades. But, we all know what happened (or believe we know what happened). At the end of the day, I'm not sure how the TWGMTR album will be remembered. It would help if any incarnation of the Beach Boys would play the TWGMTR songs at their concerts. But this is supposed to be how they didn't screw up, lol. I'm not sure that album will be remembered much, but the reunion in general will be. It may not be apparent now but I think that reunion will be an important milestone in the band's legacy in the future. I think C50 and TWGMTR helped both their career(s) and legacy, just not to a great extent. It's all positive, though, in the grand scheme of things. Only diehards are going to care or remember how or why it ended or what happened after.

This one didn't affect their career or legacy much, but it was a positive move and, I hope I'm wrong, but it might be their last. If it is, it's nice to know that they all got along and genuinely appeared to enjoy each other's company, as the photos below seem to show:

When that happened two years ago, I hoped that it would at least get the ball rolling for something.
Maybe after this COVID-19 crisis in behind us, they'll let bygones by bygones (again).

Nice, maybe, but I think you're right that it was irrelevant in terms of career or legacy. Frankly I forget about it most of the time. Right now I couldn't even tell you why they got together for it. Were they selling MIC at the time? Nice new Mrs. Love shirts?

This was to promote the Summer of 2018 XM Sirius Beach Boys temporary channel, and that RPO Plays Over The Beach Boys Greatest Hits album.

They were promoting SiriusFM airing a special Beach Boys' channel for the summer, and indirectly they were promoting the Royal Philharmonic album. Again, it will probably have little or no effect on their legacy, but "something" is going to have to be noted as the last time the group appeared together, and this very well could be it. Who knows, it might eventually be a trivia question.

I agree that the Sirius reunion was nice but forgettable. I do think that the SiriusXM channel, on the other hand, was worthwhile. I'm sure it brought in some new fans and encouraged others to explore deeper. (The RPO album? Wholly unnecessary IMO).

Shows how memorable the whole thing was for me. Cool they did it, but frankly it was small potatoes in my world, anyway. Tiny, tiny baby reds, maybe. Not even fingerlings.

The reunion itself was a bit of a disappointment. Again, nice that it happened, but the most interesting thing about it truly was 'shirtgate'. Which is sad.

We had a free trial for most of that summer, and it was nice to hear a great mix of BB hits, album tracks, and solo material.

The most interesting thing about it truly was 'shirtgate'. Which is beyond sad. I was going to mention that. "Shirtgate" did have some legs (gee, I wonder who was driving that), so much so that a couple of the Beach Boys had to explain what happened and basically exonerate Mike of all wrongdoing. Mike just handed out the striped shirts as a gift. Bruce and David decided to put theirs on right away and wear them for the broadcast. I can't remember why Brian didn't wear his, but as I recall, Al arrived late and didn't have a chance to...change clothes.

The Christmas Album! I think it might be a good example of a decision that helped them commercially and also has done wonders for their legacy. Every holiday season, reliably, the Beach Boys are back on the airwaves again, to be heard while out shopping or what have you. And the album graces the merchandising window of every record store for a solid month at least. Little St. Nick is such a Christmas staple that it's hard to imagine the season existing without it. I keep track of streaming numbers for the Beach Boys, and every year more people listen to them in December than any other time of the year. It's almost solely because of Little Saint Nick. Frosty the Snowman is pretty popular, too.

Talking about C50, I think I should point out that it also happened on the heels of the Smile Sessions being released. There was already a lot of momentum going into 2012 and people were talking about the Beach Boys again in a way that didn't include them being an oldies act or a band from 50 years ago, etc. Aside from the ending and my opinion on the choice of lead single, 2012 went about as well as anyone could hope.

Right, for one summer, they were big headlining act again.

Every day there was a new beach boys show or The Beach Boys on late night TV and the excitement of the album being number 3 on the Billboard charts. What a fantastic time that was.
As for the smartest thing they ever did in order to survive I have only 3 words: Endless summer
