Team owners are tripping over one another to announce they’re paying all employees during the shutdown. And good for them.
More impressive: Zion Williamson is covering it for the Pels’ staff.

Here is an interesting, interactive NYT feature about some potential paths depending on the timing and severity of preventative measures. Obviously (as the piece acknowledges) there are a lot of unknowns even in the assumptions to run the models, but it's still interesting.

I think I'd mentioned before that the local grocery store down the street, an independent one that isn't part of some massive chain and that isn't especially large (though it's what I'd say was a typical grocery store 25-35 years ago, before the Super Targets, Cub Foods, etc., to say nothing of Costcos), has been less insane than the major stores (maybe because it's only people in the neighborhood who even know it exists ... though that doesn't explain the relative lack of insanity in my neighborhood).
This morning I wanted to pick up a couple of things, so I walked over just after it opened, before the sun rose. I was also curious about how it was holding up. Here's my report!
Probably goes without saying, but there is no hand sanitizer, antibacterial wipes, TP, and very little kleenex.
No cilantro (but plenty of parsley). (The nice kid working got some out of the back, as the delivery was just coming in. But it had sold out yesterday.)
No jalapenos (but plenty of serranos and less-hot varieties of chile peppers).
No potatoes (but plenty of sweet potatoes).
No canned chickpeas (but plenty of dry ones, and plenty of canned black, pinto, and kidney beans).
No generic brand frozen vegetables (but plenty of high-end brands ... Minneapolitans are thrifty even in a pandemic!).
No hamburger (but plenty of all other meats).
Some weird hoarding choices going on around here.

What up with the run(s) on toilet paper (pun intended). I didn't think the virus was affecting that area. Just adding a little levity to the situation...
Anyway, my boss is going to follow the guidance of the Pennsylvania CDC - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC has been recommending/closing a lot of places. I wouldn't be surprised of my place of employment is on that list very soon.
Today I'm going to visit my mother who resides in an Assisted Living Facility. They're still accepting visitors but most of the local nursing homes are not. That's really sad for the residents there, not being able to see their families and friends.

Last night I declared myself funniest family member in a group text that was going around for (what I considered) humor covering the same area... There was no consensus, I don't think, on the declaration. If one can't make diarrhea jokes during a pandemic, when can one?

Oh, those items weren't on my list, just things I noticed were missing. Well, cilantro was on my list, which I plan to add to a fried rice one day and a Mexican chicken dish (details TBD) another.

Yesterday Wisconsin shuttered public K-12 schools, and Minnesota's governor called a press conference for 10 a.m. today to "focus on schools." If that happens, daily life gets a lot trickier for a lot of people.

Yesterday Wisconsin shuttered public K-12 schools, and Minnesota's governor called a press conference for 10 a.m. today to "focus on schools." If that happens, daily life gets a lot trickier for a lot of people. All public schools in Ontario have been shut down until the end of the month following March Break this week, and all March Break camps for kids have been cancelled, as well as all day cares, leaving parents who can't work from home scrambling to find child care. What a mess. On Friday, as anticipated, my boss did pass down the recommendation to work from home for the next couple of weeks starting tomorrow, for those of us who can.

For those of you who love sports as much as I do, how have you been spending your time? Yesterday, I watched a couple Beach Boys concerts, one being the July, 4th 1980 show and a C50 show that had good video and very good sound quality for being fan shot. Later on I watched a couple Dean Martin roasts.

I've been enjoying a lot of history documentaries on the History Time channel on Youtube as well as some others. Also Pamela Adlon's show Better Things, though I don't have much more to catch up on with that one.
On the sports front, I was thinking how cool it would have been had some networks run classic games: during championship week, the best games in conference tourneys' histories; then as the NCAAs would have begun, they could have begun running classic games from each round corresponding to where we'd have been. I imagine the rights to them (on different networks over the years) would be tricky, though.
I wonder what Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime usage looks like right now compared to historic levels. (And whether they're at risk of being above simultaneous user capacity.)

I did a little grocery shopping. Bought two clay pots at Home Depot. Balanced the checkbook. Watched a Columbo and a Soul Music From The 70's show on PBS. Played with the stray cat. Texted back and forth with some family members about the virus. Made a Turtles' comp. Started to prepare my taxes. And got a little work in (my job) in anticipating NOT working as much next week.
I visited my Mom at her Assisted Living Facility last night - just in time. This morning I got a phone call notifying me that effective Monday morning at 7:00 AM, they are restricting visitations.
The Bishop of the Diocese Of Harrisburg where my parish is located has suspended the obligation to attend Sunday Mass. We already suspended the Sign Of Peace "handshake", the use of the holy water fonts, and Holy Communion has to be received by hand (not on the tongue). I did go to Mass this morning. The church was only half full.

The church was only half full. I noticed signs on a lot of churches around the neighborhood that they were not holding in-person Mass or services this morning. The local archbishop actually gave some guidance about avoiding handshakes, etc., a couple of weeks ago--way ahead of the curve--but in the past few days other churches both caught up and then moved to full cancellations.
