An OK collage messed up by a terrible color scheme.
Oddly enough, when they replaced the orange with a slightly more pleasing blue for the 50th anniversary Party release, they opted for B&W pictures?

I like this cover (a lot more than I like the album). Orange, yeah. They're still in the '60s and that same palette.

The Party album cover is perfect. Gatefold with lots of band photos? Check. Even more photos in the form of perforated sheet of wallet sized cards stuffed inside the sleeve? Whoa, that’s teen girl heaven, right there. And the orange and brown palette… well, it’s what was cool at the time. I have very fond memories of my grandparents orange and brown living room and kitchen. And considering the location of the front cover shoot - a living room in the 60s - I can't imagine a better colour palette! For once, the packaging of a Beach Boys album looks as if some serious thought and care went into it. It’s up there with my favourites.

And considering the location of the front cover shoot - a living room in the 60s - I can't imagine a better colour palette! Definitely, those colors (plus gold and olive green) are just everywhere in that era. I think of my grandparents' furniture, or some casserole dishes my parents got when they were first married...everything was in that scheme.

My wife would murder me, but if I were left to my own devices, when I eventually get my basement done, I'd go for the wood panel look.

Did wood paneled basements ever really go out of style though?

Did wood paneled basements ever really go out of style though? I think so, based on the HGTV shows I've been subjected to.

And that brings us to maybe the most iconic album cover in the group's history, maybe because it was easily their most popular album - Pet Sounds.
I do have a few questions about the front cover. How many people consider goats to be pets? I guess there are some; I attend the local county fair and kids have their pet(?) goats on display, to be judged. Did The Beach Boys or Capitol Records' art department ever consider...maybe cats or dogs? Birds? Rabbits? All of the above? But goats? Which goat is Dennis feeding with his right hand? And, let Mike in! He has a nice leather jacket and a new hairstyle.
It's interesting again to see the guys wearing a fall and winter wardrobe.
I don't have a big problem with the song titles listed on the front cover, but it's interesting (yes, I know they were singles) that "Sloop John B" and "Caroline, No" got highlighted with a different color.
To me, the back cover is unattractive. As I've stated before, I'm a big fan of pictures, especially back in the early days, but some of these black and white shots are weird and just appear to be pasted on there. 1966 and still no colored photos on the back? At least they weren't advertising old albums. Poor Tony Asher didn't get credited because they didn't show the songwriting credits! And (drum roll)...Bruce arrives...if you look close enough.

The answer to the question in this thread’s title.
The Pet Sounds cover doesn’t match the album’s contents. But the contents are not diminished by it. The contents elevate it, so even though it’s a silly choice for the cover of this particular album, it doesn’t matter. It HAS become iconic.
The music within has absolutely coloured my opinion of the cover. I like it. The guys look good. Their outfits, though not summery, are kind of dapper. And maybe that's actually something that did go right for this cover. Is Pet Sounds a summer album? Maybe it starts out that way, but as you listen through it, you find it's an album for all seasons. At least I do.

The green and Cooper Black lettering are iconic. The photo, and cover itself......meh? When you think of iconic, essential, classic, all time albums, the Pet Sounds album cover isn't really one I'd want to frame and hang up in a music room, not like a Dark Side of the Moon, Sgt. Pepper's, Abbey Road, Who's Next, Rumours, the list goes on.

And...the first Beach Boys' album cover where the beard(s) appear! Are they no longer Beach BOYS? Have they now become Beach MEN. Is their group name starting to work against them? The Pet Sounds' cover seems like an obvious attempt to move on from:
Oh, I get it. The times they are a-changin'.
