Damon Linker writes in The Week that rock stars tend not to age well. Which doesn't seem like a particularly new idea, actually. Stems from the death of Charlie Watts and the increasing ages of the other survivors of the '60s and '70s, making it actually a bit unseemly. "Rock stars tend to decline in quality as they age, but luckily they're going to die soon"?

A good one! Rick Beato (with Brian May) discusses "Bohemian Rhapsody" on "What Makes This Song Great?"

I saved that to my watchlist the moment I saw it!

I am assuming this is credible. If so ... woe unto humanity.

If you posted this last week I would have been surprised about Madonna, but I recently watched a few YouTube videos which chronicled the most popular song for each month of a decade (I watched the 70s, 80s, and 90s). To my surprise, it felt like every 2nd or 3rd song was Madonna (in the 80s and 90s)! I knew she was/is an ICON, but I just didn’t realize how many songs she had that were HUGE.

Am I to assume the Beatles total doesn’t include solo? Paul, alone, had enough chart success in the 70s to bump the Beatles up the list (probably to #1).

Drake's success astounds me. I've barely heard anything by him, and when I do, I can honestly say I have no idea why he's popular as a musician. I mean, I know he followed the same kind of child star path I guess a lot of pop artists do. But I mean I hear nothing worthwhile in anything he's done--from the limited amount I've heard. With Cardi B, I have no idea musically why she's famous, but she shows her body and talks dirty, so I realize that appeals to people. Drake?
Right now, he has #s 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, and 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. Nine of the Top 10.

I can say this about many artists of the last 20 years, but the amount of songs he has on the Hot 100 is crazy. Speaking crazy, I was searching for "O" artists for our alphabet game on Spotify, and Olivia Rodrigo came up. One of her songs apparently has 1 billion streams. For somebody who has not been around for very long, that is astounding.

I think that's where streaming as opposed to radio play or (even more so) purchases changes things so much. If anyone can listen to anything anytime for free, it's a lot different than rating things by sales. It's more the equivalent of listens.
One sale of a Beatles album would result in hundreds of listens, but count as one. In the streaming environment, it counts as hundreds.

Speaking of charts, I see that Ms. Rodrigo was bumped from #3 to #4 by Iron Maiden.
I have to admit, I take some joy in that since there's something about her I just find very irritating.

I'm old.

I don't even care about that, although I do think it's stupid looking. I just find her music to be very whiny and childish.

This also has to be a product of a streaming environment:
Every song on the album in the Top 40 (and there are 21 of them!?). With streaming, singles (sorry, focus tracks!) are less important. Those (few) super popular artists--Drake, Taylor Swift, various people I'm sure I've never heard of--are going to see each track from their albums "perform" like a single on the charts.

This is why I hate when stats like this are posted because the goal posts have been moved so much. I remember in the summer of 2014, we were hit with a plague on the ears known as Iggy Azalea. She had a couple hits, and also appeared on hits by other pop stars, so there was a big deal made because "her first five songs went to #1."
