The Lemon Twigs' new album, Songs For the General Public, finally came out today. (I think the first single was out three, four, even five months ago. It's been a while.)
As usual, there are a lot of 70s touchstones especially. This one surprised me with its almost Zappa-esque idiosyncrasy: I don't think I could dance to it. (Then again I can't dance in general. And don't particularly want to.) It's almost pop-prog.

I finally checked out the Lemon Twigs. I've seen them mentioned a number of times over the past few years, in various places. Anyway, after you posted the above, Kap, I spotified them and fell in love. Wow, what a fun band. Not only do I super dig their music, I love their videos. Especially this one:
Anyway, I bought Songs for General Public last weekend. I was hoping to score a copy of Do Hollywood as well, but couldn't find it.

That song ("The One") is almost certainly my favorite from them. I've actually been hot and cold on them, and when I first heard them in the Do Hollywood time frame I was pretty dismissive. But I have to admit they've grown on me, and are occasionally great.

But I have to admit they've grown on me, and are occasionally great. Sometimes the timing just has to be right, at least for me, I find. Something about Do Hollywood was just a breath of fresh air and a ray of light, and it might have to do with WAP or something like that, lol. The Lemon Twigs might not have been what I wanted before that, but boy do I want it now.

That song in particular just strikes me as the most joyous, energetic, uplifting music of the year so far. Great, big melody covering a lot of range. Electric track. It's just power pop in all its glory!
EDIT: No offense to the undeniable genius of WAP.

I never thought I'd say this. I listened to two new BOC songs yesterday. That Was Me and Box In My Head. Right now, I probably prefer the latter as it sounds more like BOC to me.

I mentioned the Flaming Lips in another thread--I think the "I should have stayed in the shallow end" one--as being a band whose catalog really didn't warrant serious investigation, who only had a few good ones and a lot of, uh, others.
Well imagine my surprise when it turns out I'm enjoying their new album released today, American Head. Sonically it fits alongside their best material, The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi. Songwise, I'm not sure it's quite there. But it is enjoyable. I'll give it another listen and may well end up buying at least some of the tracks, maybe the whole album. We'll see...

A while back Ringo said that What's My Name (2019) will be his last album, that any future releases will be EPs. I found that somewhat interesting. Good for him. Appears he's sticking to that...

I'd love to see more artists use singles and EPs. For well over a decade now, I've been questioning especially legacy artists' apparent insistence that albums are the form, when in reality you can release whatever, whenever. And for people who have been at it for a long while, it might be more appealing to do one, two, four songs when the spirit moves them, but leave it at that.

I remember Def Leppard hinted a few years ago that they were going to do that because they questioned whether or not it was really worth releasing a full album, especially since most of their audience wants to hear their 80s material. However, when they went into the studio, they had so many songs, that the end result was a full on LP. I definitely see the logic of singles and EPs, especially since we're in the digital age, but I'm glad that artists like The Who, who released a really strong album last year, are still having a real go at it.

I'm definitely not anti-album! For those artists with the quality material, I say go for it. I'd rather make a single purchase for a dozen songs than six two-song purchases spread out over a year or two.
But for those people for whom an album seems to be a mountain to climb (e.g., Mr. B.D. Wilson), going back to singles makes so much sense.

This may sound blasphemous, but I think Sir Paul could do well to try his hand as singles or EPs.

Jeff Tweedy (Wilco frontman/songwriter) announced a new solo album due October 23, Love is the King. He also released two singles in advance of it, the title track and "Guess Again."
Based on his announcement, it's apparently a bit more folk-country than Wilco (which is funny, since that's the aesthetic Wilco grew out of to begin with to some extent).
While I usually prefer Wilco to Tweedy music, I kind of like "Guess Again" in a casual, easygoing way.

A new Fleet Foxes album was released yesterday with only a day or two's notice. I'm not much of a fan (though I enjoy some of their music on some level). This bit of the new album caught my attention, though. Listen to the introductory countoff.
It is a sample of B. Douglas Wilson. (Kind of cool song, too.)

The second pre-album single from Bruce Springsteen's upcoming album came out today. Here's "Ghosts":
