"Time" is one of my favourite tracks from POB, if not my favourite. Nothing like it before or since: The line in "Time" - "I'm the kind of guy who loves to mess around, know a lot of women, but they don't fill my heart with love, completely free, ooh I love you, I really do...."
THAT'S what I love about Dennis Wilson's music. The way he expresses his feelings. The bareness. The directness of what he's trying to get across. The way he sings it. His voice was shot but he could still make it work.

I'll withhold my thoughts about the first half, but I do like the last minute and fifteen seconds or so, when there's some, the horns, the plunking piano, the electric guitars, etc. Obviously that doesn't really go anywhere, either, but it's a nice piece of arranging and has some oompf that I wish Dennis did more of. Musically. I think he did plenty of oompf otherwise.

After several years of making Beach Boys' compilations, first on cassette and later on CD, I focused my attention away from The Beach Boys and to Dennis Wilson's music. On some of The Beach Boys' comps that I made, especially the middle/later years' ones, there was frequently a Dennis Wilson song like "Forever" or "Cuddle up" or "Baby Blue" that stood out and prompted the listeners to ask "Who's singing that?" or say "I really like that song."
I'm a huge fan of Pacific Ocean Blue. I think it's not only the best Beach Boys' solo album, but one of the best albums in the entire Beach Boys-related album catalogue. AND I WANTED MORE PEOPLE TO HEAR IT! But, there were two problems, well, not really problems but issues that had to be addressed. First, Pacific Ocean Blue is loaded with ballads and slower songs. I'm not saying the album drags, but I definitely wouldn't describe it as upbeat either. The second issue is time. Pacific Ocean Blue clocks in at 37 minutes. That leaves a lot of time to fill a 60-minute cassette or an 80-minute CD. But that's a pleasant problem! And the solution? Combine the best of Pacific Ocean Blue with the best of Dennis Wilson's Beach Boys' material. Here's what I came up with and have been distributing to unsuspecting family, friends, and co-workers :
Dennis Wilson - Forever
01 Never learn Not To Love 02 Fallin' In Love (Remix) 03 (Wouldn't It Be Nice) To Live Again 04 Slip On Through 05 Cuddle Up 06 Forever 07 Rainbows 08 River Song 09 Love Remember Me 10 Farewell My Friend 11 Mexico 12 Time 13 You And I 14 Moonshine 15 Common 16 Thoughts Of You 17 Holy Man 18 Baby Blue 19 End Of The Show 20 My Love Lives On 21 Piano Variations On Thoughts Of You *
* Optional as a bonus track/hidden track - delete it if you don't think it fits
- songs that almost made the cut include Be Still (to start the comp), Celebrate The News, Knebworth version of You Are So Beautiful, Only With You (later version), and Tug Of Love
My choice for the album cover photo:

I was going to post this in the Surprised To Hear thread but I think it fits better here.
Last night I was driving home from work, radio station surfing, and tuned into 88.7 WXPN in Philadelphia. All of a sudden I hear this intro to a song that was immediately familiar, but I couldn't quite place it. Well, a few seconds later it hit me - it was "Pacific Ocean Blues". After I got over the shock, I thought I would concentrate and listen to how it sounds on FM radio, in 2021, played alongside other artists. I have to say that it sounded quite good! The music part was fine; it didn't sound dated at all. Dennis' vocals, while acceptable, might've turned off the average listener, but even those sounded...OK.
I was hoping the DJ would at least note the song at the end, and he did, but I was slightly disappointed. Initially, I thought the DJ/program director just picked the song out of nowhere to play/feature it, but it was part of a show called Highs Of The 70's and the theme was One Album Wonders, so that took away the uniqueness of it being played just a little. But the DJ said it was by "Dennis Wilson from his solo album album, Pacific Ocean Blue, released in the summer (?) of 1977", and "the song, Pacific Ocean Blues, was written with Beach Boy Mike Love..." Anyway, it was a fun surprise on the drive home from a long day at work.

To quote from a post (since removed by me) at EH, "here's the BB studio version from 1973 (with thanks to AGD) of 'River Song', one of the few 'alternate' BB-related takes that does it for me. This is sensational." This is for the good person who "liked" it over there and whom I have unintentionally wronged. (And now I'll say no more about it on-forum):

Dennis would have been 78 today. Twice the age he was allowed to reach.
Out there with the ships at sea.
"Here we are With our dreams in the sky We all have our dreams It's wonderful to know we're alive At the end It's over"
Sorely missed.

I love hearing the emotion in Dennis’ voice without the dramatic orchestration. I could listen to this all day 🥰

I am grateful that folks are now getting the opportunity to appreciate the richness of Dennis' music all over again, and that we are finally getting to hear his recordings that weren't available before.
I agree about hearing his CATP songs without the strings, quite the revelation, indeed. Especially in the case of "Make It Good," where it seems like the strings and the rest of the recording were fighting each other. Now we have a version where the raw emotional beauty of his singing is up front.

Between the initially released material and these past two copyright releases, a person can put together quite a collection of it (sadly not all finished).
