My goodness, this place is thriving! I'm not sure I'm needed here at all. Still, as I am here, I'll do what folks seem to expect of me and launch a new topic. I can't really kick off this one with anything other than this anthem. And when Martha starts singing it really was a brand new beat at the time--nothing like that crashing offbeat had been heard before then:

Recently my niece got married and her new husband knew that I was into making comp CDs, so he asked me to make him a Motown comp. I decided to play it safe with a mixture of groups and a mixture of only the top hits - except for one. I wanted to include a great Motown song, but one that maybe isn't heard/played as much on the radio, and one that, even though it was a hit, he might not be familiar with. So I chose this classic from Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, written by Ashford and Simpson:

Of all the Stevie Wonder songs, I think my favorite is "My Cherie Amour". Such a great AM radio song. Listen to the bass on this performance!

Indeed, that bass is something else! One of my favourites by Stevie is from when he was still Little Stevie. A gorgeous Jack Nitzsche production, "Castles In The Sand" didn't even dent the top 50 in the US in 1963:

The Miracles could really ring the changes, from a skull-cruncher like "Going To A-Go Go"...
...to the tear-jerking likes of "Ooo Baby Baby":

You nailed it! Easily my two favorite Smokey Robinson & The Miracles' songs. "Ooo Baby Baby" is also one of greatest slow dance songs of all-time. I even like Linda Ronstadt's cover of the song.

So, jk, your above post got me listening to Smokey Robinson & The Miracles' "Going To A Go-Go". Then I revisited Linda Ronstadt's version which is very good. Then, today, I got to thinking of another cover of the song by The Rolling Stones. Back in the early days of MTV, this video was played like every hour. MTV only had so many videos and The Rolling Stones took advantage of that, especially when Tattoo You came out. This is a decent version and video. Hey, it's The Stones:

With all due respect to Mick and co, Sheriff, I'll stick with the original. The Beatles did at two Motown covers, Barrett Strong's "Money" and The Marvelettes' "Please Mr Postman", which I bought at the time (1961). Luckily they recorded it before the ladies redid it (in 1965?) in a watered-down version with changed lyrics.

Thanks, and you know what? I think I prefer The Beatles' version.

Good call, Sheriff! Here's my choice: a teenage Stevie Wonder and "What Christmas Means To Me":

Hw could I forget Kim Weston's "Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me A Little While)"? It's one of my all-time favourite Motown tracks--the less-is-more instrumental break is one of my all-time favourite musical moments, period. The lyrics seem to be celebrating a relationship that has ended rather than mourning its demise. Truly wonderful stuff.
