Yep. After all, there has to be some kind of explanation for the success of Billie Eilish.
And now, thanks to mp3 and streaming, you have a whole generation who believes they shouldn't have to pay for music. And we wonder why tickets and merch are so fucking expensive now .

I'm not ready to move on from Mike's The Greatest's above comment that "Caroline, No" is Brian Wilson's best vocal. I took a temporary break from Christmas music and pulled out Pet Sounds. After listening to the album for the 437th time, I put "Caroline, No" on repeat.
It is the best damn Brian Wilson vocal of all-time! It is so clear. So emotional. So mature, moving on from his previous more-youthful voice. The phrasing is perfect. The enunciating. Tony Asher's lyrics are so simple but couldn't be more succinct.
All of the lines, all of the words are perfect, but there is one particular line or lines that Brian absolutely nails - "Who took that look away? I remember how you used to say, you'd never change but that's not true, oh, Caroline you..." When Brian sings "...but that's not true, oh, Caroline you...", it STILL gets to me every time, even after hearing it for several decades.
I am very conflicted about the story of Murry Wilson speeding up the tape for "Caroline, No". I hate the slower (correct, original?) version. I'm happy and content with the released version.

I prefer the originally released (sped up) version, too. And agree that it's right up there among Brian's best vocals, if it's not the one. (I don't want to commit to that ... but it's great, as Brian ALWAYS was in that era, in my opinion.)

Great vocal, of course, but I don't even think its Brian's best on Pet Sounds. To me, that would be You Still Believe in Me, followed by Wouldn't It Be Nice and IJWMFTT.

All of Brian's Pet Sounds vocals are sublime but I'd have to go with Wouldn't It Be Nice as his best lead vocal on that album.
You Still Believe In Me wins the title of Best Beach Boys' Harmony with those ahhhhh's at the end.

How could we leave out this one?! When I first discovered the Beach Boys' early albums, I didn't particularly care for the instrumentals. For several years (decades actually), I actually skipped over most of them. Then, a few years ago, I kind of forced myself to give them a fresh listen by making a comp of Beach Boys' instrumentals, and I found that I really enjoyed them. Some of them rock! Those Fender guitars do sound great. Now, I'm not saying that I love the instrumentals or even seek them out consistently, but I do have a better appreciation of them now. You won't find them on Beach Boys' official comps and they won't be performed live, but check out "Surf Jam", "Moon Dawg", "Miserlou", "Carl's Big Chance" (referenced above), and what I think is underrated, "Shut Down Part 2".

Yes, "SDP2" is a really cool instrumental. I believe it was resurrected for a show Brian did on TV when he was starting to perform again (mfp provided a link at SSMB, which I may look up some time). What I like most about the SUSA instrumentals is that they showcase Carl and David's "guitar machine", arguably for the first and last time. Lastly, is this an official comp?? www.amazon.com/Instrumental-Hits-Beach-Boys/dp/B000066ACJ

We do have a My Favorite Beach Boys Songs thread going, and I don't want to infringe on that. However, I thought I'd expand on it a little, still keeping the songs aspect, but adding albums. It's just for the fun of it. There's no right or wrong answers, even though I'll tell you when you're wrong! We'll keep this to Beach Boys-only releases and see how if goes. Maybe we can do the solo albums - or other artists - later. And, I'm going to make a special rule - Pick two in each category. It's impossible to choose just one.
Favorite album: Pet Sounds, Love You
Least favorite album: Beach Boys Concert, Still Cruisin'
