Band names. I very rarely think "cool name!" Instead eventually if I like a band, the name just goes along with it.
Conversely, I very, very, very often think "what a stupid name."
The phenomenon that got me thinking this morning was this stupid one: [Blank] the [Blank]. For example:
Chance the Rapper Hero the Band Portugal the Son The Orphan The Poet Tyler the Creator Megan Thee Stallion (I'm counting Thee as akin to The) Conway the Machine
(btw I don't know all of these. But once I thought of the annoyingness of some I did know, I started perusing iTunes promoted albums and added to the list I did know.)
What about you? Any band names you like or hate?

Diarrhea Planet. They opened for The Darkness at the Phoenix, in 2017. I liked their music about as much as I like their name.
To add to the "blank the blank" list above - Cage the Elephant.

Being a huge Doors' fan, I was disappointed when the three surviving members broke up the band in 1973. At the same time, I was excited to hear Ray, Robby, and John's new solo music. I know this thread is about BAND names, but I just wanted to mention that the titles of Ray Manzarek's first two solo albums were The Golden Scarab and The Whole Thing Started With Rock And Roll Now It's Out Of Control. Jeesh...
Anyway, Robby Krieger and John Densmore stayed together and formed The Butts Band. That's what I said...The Butts Band. As I said, I consider myself a pretty big Doors' fan, but I'll be damned if I could ever figure out what that name meant or who came up with it. I've heard three possible explanations. First, they were named after the Island of Butts or the Isle Of Butts, but I never heard of those islands, never saw them on a map, and don't know what they have to do with the band. The second story I read was that Robby Krieger was a big fan of Paul Butterfield and the Butterfield Blues Band, so he named The Butts Band as a tribute to that band. The third reason I read was that the band was named after a cave where lead singer, Jess Roden, used to practice with his band. Yep, Butts Cave.
So there you go. Regardless of where the name came from, it has to be one of the most unappealing names for a band that I can think of!
Ladies and gentlemen, The Butts Band!

The Band Perry. And there is also the thing of having a solo artist using a name that sounds like a band: Hamell on Trial World Party and...well, I can't think of the others, but I know they are out there

I had long been put off by the band name Throbbing Gristle (ever the prude!) until RR played a gorgeous track at Smiley by Genesis P-Orridge's follow-up band Psychic TV. That led me to discover the joys of TG's extraordinary album 20 Jazz Funk Greats. "Godstar" was the PTV track in question:

Looking through today's new releases, I couldn't help but note some of the terrible, terrible band names! (Including another in my most-hated formula [blank] the [blank], this one more nonsensical than any I've seen.)
Royce da 5'9" (OK, technically it's a da, not the. But same formula.) iamnotshane Rolling Blackouts C.E. (cut the C.E. and it's fine. Not great, fine.) SWMRS (vowels, goddamnit: this isn't ancient Hebrew)

If people still actually went to music stores, Rolling Blackouts CE would be a great name to get your albums / CDs mixed in some another more famous band

Yes, I spent a lot of time in the B section at the record store. Speaking of BOC, they're starting to release some later era live material in anticipation of their first studio album in nearly 20 years.

Was THE BEACH BOYS the best of names...or the worst of names?

Awful name, in my opinion. But luckily, once you come to know a great band, the name leeches some of the musical greatness and you don't notice how awful it was.

For the first six albums, it made sense. Even moreso than the name they actually chose (Pendletones).
