This is exactly what I'd love for the Beach Boys in a new documentary. Exactly. Except with all of them separately (and together, maybe even in various configurations). I love it. I wanted to respond to this, not to take a shot at Beach Boys, but, I guess, just to express frustration.
I haven't seen the McCartney/Rubin interviews you're watching, but I think I can get a pretty good picture of how it comes across. And, I don't know if the surviving Beach Boys are even capable of something like that any more. Mike talks both in the "big picture" sense and also over-simplifies things so much that he doesn't really offer anything substantial. Al has a tendency to get caught up in "words" and ends up saying things that are either, like Mike, obvious or down right wacky. Same with Bruce, and he likes to go with the profound or shock element. Like Al, he'll say things that make the listener go, "What?"
And then there's Brian. Yes, we've seen it, albeit rarely, where Brian takes his time, is thoughtful, and offers some real insight on how he...did things. However, he usually ends up not really grasping the question, or over-simplifying the answer, or just doesn't want to take the time and effort to offer something really eye-opening - if he remembers at all, though people say he does.
For The Beach Boys to do a meaningful documentary like you are proposing, you would need a producer or director who would be demanding and insist on something with substance, not fluffy reminiscing or "First you come up with the melody, then you record the track, then you record the lead vocal..."

Yelp, I guess I'm about to pay for another form entertainment outlet that'll barely get used. I'll have to see if they still offer that bundle with Spotify.

Episode 3 includes the telling of the writing of "Back in the USSR." Let me say, someone would be very offended by the version offered up. Yeah, he either simply didn't recall or had thought Mike had taken more than enough credit over the years.

I'm not sure if I had heard about this or not but the heads up and positive reviews here led me to binge it on Sunday. It's the sort of the thing I'm not normally in a rush to check out but I was pleasantly surprised. Of course, you're going to hear some of the same old stories, and there will be more Beatle content than solo, but I thought it was very well made. Wisely, it's not in chronological order. The setup with the mixing board and listening, playing guitar and piano, and cutting to photos and footage, was all really well done. I love how focused on the music it was. I mean, it's pretty fascinating to see Paul listening to his music, and between him and Rick, deciding which tracks to fade in or out and focus on. The emphasis on his bass playing was MOST welcome. That's the type of thing I'd hope he'd do, but never expected. Obviously, Paul is interested in how he'll be remembered. I think this doc focused on the right things, and he went about it with more humility than you'd typically expect from him. I really was impressed with his demeanor.
SPOILER ALERT
A few highlights off the top of my head: - His vocal improvisation over the bass part of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" - The John quote praising his bass playing - When he said he thought he'd be in the Beatles forever - The story and footage of Fela Kuti - Though, not a new story - "Thinking of Linking" - His performance of a new song - Generally, the song selection. "Check My Machine" was a shocker, but it's kinda cool that they went there. Even decisions like using a little bit of "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)" between episodes.
I feel like I'm forgetting some of the best parts. Oh well...I'm tired. I'm not saying it's the greatest doc ever or anything, but it's enjoyable - even if you're a diehard (as it's pretty clearly, and understandably, geared towards casual fans and new generations).
I will say, though, that the balance between their speaking voices and the music was not ideal. Sometimes I couldn't totally understand what Paul was saying over the music.

Discussion going on over at Smiley Smile at how offensive California Girls is. Maybe Mike should write new lyrics that are toned down from the lust-fest that the original is.

Don’t give him any ideas! Anyway, it was just one poster trolling. Everyone else disagreed.

Over the years on the BB boards I've been on, it seems like every couple months, somebody feels the need to post about the "questionable" lyrics of California Girls.

Yeah, there are always popping up threads about how they're sexist and racist and whatever else. People need to keep in mind, we weren't always lucky enough to have enlightened role models like Cardi B, Lil Nas X, Lil Wayne, and Megan Thee Stallion in music.

Questionable lyrics is the least serious (is that a term?) criticism that Mike Love has to endure. I noticed on "that board" that when they exhaust a current Hammer Mike Love Thread, they just resurrect an old one - and pile on all over again. Now it's back to criticizing Mike for the way he handled Carl's illness. It never ends.

Right, and hell, if somebody thinks California Girls is questionable, I've love to see their reactions to Whitesnake and Motley Crue.

But, I've noticed the revisionist California Girls stuff even on boards that don't focus their energy on hating Mike.

A deluxe Let It Be reissue is forthcoming in October, presumably timed to roughly coincide with the Peter Jackson film. It includes the original album, a 1969 Glyn Johns mix of the proposed album, and various unreleased session rehearsals, recordings, jams, and some new mixes.

Here is the new mix of "Let It Be," released on YouTube yesterday. By the way, I kind of like the Beatles approach (and some others do it too) of turning off comments: here's the music, do with it as you will, but none of the sniping, blind praise, insults, bizarre evangelism, trolling, etc., that usually ends up creeping anywhere it's given an inch.

I think one of the silver linings of COVID is that I've noticed a lot of artists seem to have really embraced YouTube for putting up new music, archival music / concerts / music videos, or little vignettes.
