Dylan joins the pay-for-streaming concert crowd, with $25 tickets available to watch Shadow Kingdom, "a new streamed concert via Live Nation–owned livestreaming company Veeps that is set to take place July 18. Presented as the singer-songwriter’s first broadcast performance in almost three decades, the show will feature Dylan “in an intimate setting as he presents renditions of songs from his extensive and renowned body of work created especially for this event.”"

The last great/good/first bad discussion got me thinking it's time to make a latter-day Dylan comp. After a couple of meetings, here, I'm going to dive in to the albums from Time Out of Mind onward. I think that '98-'08 decade in particular had a lot of good stuff. (I'm much less a fan of what came after.)

I had a Bob Dylan conversation with a co-worker recently, and this co-worker knew some of Dylan's early, classic songs, but wasn't familiar with most (almost any) of his later period. So, this comp was born:
Bob Dylan - Not Dark Yet
01 Thunder On The Mountain 02 High Water (For Charlie Patton) 03 Man In The Long Black Coat 04 Cold Irons Bound 05 Love Sick 06 Things Have Changed 07 Most Of The Time 08 Political World 09 Trying To Get To Heaven 10 God Knows 11 Summer Days 12 Not Dark Yet 13 Mississippi 14 Shooting Star 15 Series Of Dreams

Did you get any feedback on it? I can't help but wonder what someone who liked earlier Dylan but wasn't familiar with latter-day Dylan might think upon first impressions.

Not surprisingly, no, I didn't get much feedback. He wasn't exactly asking for a comp, I just kind of...well, you know what I mean. Obviously, my Dylan enthusiasm was greater than his. We've all been there.

Believe it or not, "God Knows" might be my favorite of the bunch. I was listening to it just last night! It wasn't too long ago I was listening to much of his later work for the first time, so I can sort of answer Kapitan's question. Of these - "High Water", "Summer Days", "Shooting Star", and "Trying To Get To Heaven" also standout. That said, the highs are in that 8-8.5 range; whereas, the highs in his earlier career were all 10ers. The rest of the playlist is nice, but later Bob is an acquired taste, I think. Probably - the more you dig in and listen (and read the lyrics while listening), the more you'll get out of it. But, in my experience, I wasn't really knocked out by anything. And, I know I mentioned it previously, but I'm not as big a fan of Oh Mercy, and in particular "Man In The Long Black Coat" and "Most of the Time". Those are my two least favorites on the album. I'd trade them in for "Everything Is Broken" and maybe another off Under The Red Sky.By the way, I just listened to "Things Have Changed" for the first time ( I think?). That's a good one. I'd include that with the other standouts I mentioned. Edit: Honorable mention to "Cold Irons Bound" and "Mississippi". I like 'em, but I don't love 'em.

Great post, B.E. Yes, the "later" Dylan is an acquired taste, even moreso than his early and middle periods, I think.
I like Oh Mercy a lot, but then I'm a big fan of Daniel Lanois' work with Dylan. "Everything Is Broken" was on the comp, then off, then on, and finally off...for now anyway. But, I won't take off "The Man In The Long Black Coat".
I'm glad you like "God Knows". I have a soft spot for Under The Red Sky, maybe because it's been overwhelmingly criticized; I don't know, maybe it's an underdog thing. But, I do think there's a handful of good to very good songs on the album.
You're right. On a "Dylan scale", yes, I guess much (most?) of his later stuff is a grade lower, but not completely across the board. And, I feel very strongly about that. When I/you/we make comps like this and cherry-pick the best songs, I can enjoy the music just as much as the classic period(s). It might be because of playing "the same old" Dylan tracks for years, and NOT playing the later songs for as long. I'm curious how I'll feel a few years from now.

I really love quite a bit of latter-day Dylan! For whatever reason, I think I prefer it to some of the more acclaimed periods (including the first few years). Not ALL of it, mind you. But the two solo-acoustic covers albums and then '98-'08? Love 'em.

SJS, I just checked my records (seriously, I save all the song/album rankings I've done over the past few years ) and the only songs that would HAVE to make my list, which didn't make yours, is "Lonesome Day Blues" and "Make You Feel My Love".

(I'm so glad to have a working iPod again!)

Only tonight did I notice that you could sing "Motorpsycho Nitemare" right along with "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream"! Has that been apparent to every listener since 1965 other than me?

(No shame from me. Sometimes I think I'm the king of late realizations. For example, I only realized that "a baker's dozen" meant 13 when I was well into adulthood, probably my 30s, despite having known the phrase forever. I just thought it was an artistic kind of way to say a dozen.)

A review of Dylan's new show, available for streaming for a couple days. All new band, mostly old songs.
