I was randomly thinking about bands / artists who are now considered somewhat cool that weren't before.
This came from a conversation I was having recently about Phil Collins. I'd touched upon this on other boards, but in the second half of the 1980s and into the early 1990s, Phil Collins was one of the most hated artists (and loved too based on the record sales) on the planet. It was likely a case of Phil overload with massive solo & Genesis hits, movie / TV roles, his participation in the ill fated Led Zeppelin Live Aid set, etc. But, the tide has turned on Phil over the last 20 years. Maybe it's because he's kept a relatively low profile in the 21st Century and people tend to be more accepting of musicians that aren't "everywhere." In the Air Tonight has been a pop culture mainstay. He probably achieved some cool thanks to a memorable scene in the cult movie American Psycho as well.
In addition to Phil Collins, there's The Beach Boys. In the late 80s / early 90s, thanks in part to association with Full House and Kokomo, The Beach Boys were seen as very uncool. But, then the indie crowd starting to talk about Brian Wilson in the late 1990s. Suddenly, the back catalog of The Beach Boys started to get more respect.
Another one is Iron Maiden. In the 1990s, a heavy metal bands with high octave singers and twin lead guitar were replaced with detuned guitars and more guttural vocals. Bands like Maiden had a tough time in the 1990s. Bruce Dickinson's departure in 1992 certainly didn't help. But, in the 2000s, the metal community started to embrace their legends in a big way, and with Bruce Dickinson rejoining the group, the band has seen more success in the US in the 2000s than they even did in their 1980s hey day.
Are there any other bands that can come full circle?
