I think Carl was cleaned up by Knebworth: his biggest problem times were mid-to-late 70s, I believe. (Didn't he get cleaned up more or less once and for all after the Australian embarrassment?) Certainly it's right in that era when he left himself over these same issues of lack of professionalism and quality.

Yikes.

A little interview with Carl and Brian (both in shades) about Sloop John B. One wouldn't guess who's the musical genius from this one.

An odd one, a group interview with Al, Bruce, Carl, and Mike from 1992 by an Australian journalist, just before the release of SIP and an Australian tour.
Poor Al seems not to have audio or something, even seeming frustrated at one point with someone off screen to our left. The interviewer asks Carl at one point about sticking together, bringing up Dennis's death and Brian's "walkabout," and then asks Carl about Mike's lawsuits, though Mike breaks in to answer it.
And while I'm not the fashion police by any stretch, they're all looking out of another age.

Those outfits are pretty subtle for that era.

Al's and especially Bruce's hair jumped out at me. The white socks on Bruce and Carl seemed a little out of place for the outfits, too.

This wasn't for a documentary; it was just to promote an upcoming appearance. Yet, the interviewer asked about Dennis' death, Brian losing the plot , the repetitive setlist, (Mike's) lawsuit(s), and why the band keeps going and just doesn't...retire. Cracked me up.

Certainly. I didn't mean the interviewer himself was to blame or anything (or even that there WAS blame). Just that it was a strange overall watch.

I'm on an interview kick today.
1988, just before "Kokomo." They actually praise "Wipeout" to some degree in touting their sustained relevance, but mention that "Kokomo" will be forthcoming in a Disney movie, "Cocktail." They also dance around the "will Brian be on this tour?" question a little, which is amusing. And Bruce adds a weird little "you don't have to bring a bottle of Jack Daniels to our show and drive home smashed" comment near the end.

In the interview, Bruce said that "Wipe Out" went No. 1 in England. OK, I'll be THAT GUY. I think "Wipe Out" only went to No. 2 in the U.K. Ordinarily, one position wouldn't matter, but when it means a No. 1...

Here's a well done promotional video from 2012:

An oldie but a goodie. Is the highlight of the performance the awkward background singers' dance moves? The sax player's glorious hair? Then there's the interview, where it seems to take Brian a few moments to get what made it hard for Dave to surf in Indiana. All of these delights plus one of Brian's worse solo songs...

Of all the songs to pick, wow. Night Time is lucky that Runaway Dancer exists.

The Letterman appearance might be the most nerve-wracking, deflating, and saddest BB/BW TV moment I ever experienced. I saw it the night it aired and I could not have been more excited. I don't remember if Brian had yet made the early morning TV show route, but I remember NOT seeing much of him for awhile, and didn't know what to expect. Every part of the appearance - the song selection, the performance, and the interview - were terrible. I was so upset that I couldn't get to sleep that night. Something was very, very wrong.
