I found it funny that they open the discussion saying that most bands of their era have split, but they continue on. True in name, but let's think about this! Marks left. Jardine left and returned. Wilson left live shows. Johnston joined. Wilson almost left, for practical purposes. Chaplin and Fataar joined. Johnston left. Chaplin and Fataar left. Wilson rejoined. Johnston rejoined.
That's just key members! Then you have various key sidemen, like the early 70s Hinsche-Dragon era or the later Altbach-era guys.
Then within a couple years after this video, you have all three Wilsons more or less out of the band at some point or another.
Hardly the same as the impression of "they stayed with it" the video gives!

And while I didn't break out my magnifying glass or headphones, I'm pretty sure Dennis wasn't present as he had been suspended from the group at the time.

My two takeaways:
- I see that even back then, Brian was quickly exiting the stage before the final song was over.
- In 1979 they had the world on a string - and blew it. They recently signed a new record contract - with a friend and ex-bandmate in James Guercio. They were still relatively young and in good physical shape. Their touring "machine" was well-oiled; in some ways, at least touring-wise, they were still riding a wave of popularity from Endless Summer/Spirit Of America. They were even doing side projects like Pacific Ocean Blue, Celebration, and shortly Carl Wilson. However, drugs, mental illness, divorce, and bad financial investments would literally cripple certain members and subsequently the group - and they had no answers. When you see videos like this, it makes you want to go back in time and kidnap them and talk to them and FORCE them to get help.

This is painful to watch, but thankfully, Brian would soon get his medication adjusted.

Yes, that is definitely unpleasant.

I love the whole video showing him and Mike just talking and in the studio. I wonder what people thought when that interview was aired.

On this one, the studio stuff begins at 48:40 - with Andy Paley, Mark Linett, and David Leaf:

The excellent video of That Same Song with the Double Rock Baptist Church's gospel choir is back on youtube:
Edit: It appears that this was never actually taken off youtube, but this version definitely is a much better quality.

Thanks!
Whenever I see that video, I think: - What were those choir members thinking as this obviously unwell bear of a man is apparently some legend. - Dennis's look at around 1:20, toward the choir, I just always imagine he's looking at someone he's had, or is planning to have.

I wonder whose idea it was to go with that gospel arrangement. Did it precede or follow Dennis's use of the choir on "River Song"?

This just came up out of nowhere in some emails with friends and I thought I'd share it. I LOVED this. Brian looked really engaged. Sometimes I think he'd rather do background vocals than anything else.

A 2004 live performance posted by Brian's official youtube account. Good performance, great sound quality.
