Top Ten Bands / Artists I've seen in concert I'm not a frequent concert goer, so here's my top 5. 1. Paul McCartney (2005, 2011) 2. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers (2005, 2006) 3. James Taylor (2012) 4. Neil Young & Crazy Horse (2003, 2012) 5. Fleetwood Mac (1997, 2003) Honorable mention: America (2012) and Weezer (2002) This I can do! And, the chronological order very nearly matches my rating for them. 1. Jerry Lee Lewis, March '58, Memorial Auditorium, Sacramento, CA * 2. The Beatles, Aug '66 Candlestick Park, SF. CA 3. Jimi Hendrix Feb '68 Sacramento, CA 4. Buffalo Springfield & Moby Grape, '68 Sacramento, CA 5 Mothers of Invention Jun '68 Convention Center, Anaheim, CA 6 Cream & The Grateful Dead, '68 Memorial Auditorium, Sacramento, CA 7 Elvis Presley '71 Lake Tahoe, NV 8 The Beach Boys Dec '71, Winterland, SF, CA 9 Burt Bacharach '74 Lake Tahoe, NV 10 Ennio Morricone '07 Radio City Music Hall, NYC
* I was 4. I vividly remember the concert's finale.

5 Mothers of Invention Jun '68 Convention Center, Anaheim, CA Would love to hear about this one! My dad and his wife took me on their trip to Disneyland. I was at that sullen age and didn't have much interest in that. I was a music freak. On the first day down there he drove me to Hollywood. We stopped in at Wallach's Music City, that's where I first found out that the Beach Boys had a brand new album out called Friends; I had no idea. I had been a huge Beach Boys fan since early '63, but I had lost touch with what they were doing at about the time Wild Honey came out. By then I was very much into other, heavier, groups and jazz (Gabor Szabo, stuff like that). So, that evening he asked me if I wanted to see any musical groups. We checked the paper and I asked if he would take me to see the Mothers Of Invention. He was cool with that. That night he drove to the Convention Center, dropped me off, and told me where to meet him after the show. It was general admission, no seats. One of the opening bands was PG&E. As they were playing their set, the Mothers were in the audience milling about, dancing, and whatnot. Frank was working the room, too. I was awestruck. I had to get his autograph. I had no pen or paper, so I asked a girl nearby if she had an eyebrow pencil. With her pencil in hand I walked up to Frank and asked him to autograph my navel. He obliged. At one point in the Mother's set he announced that they would going to play 'nine songs simultaneously.' The drummer started it off, I think he played Topsy, or another tom tom beat kinda tune. Then Louie Louie was brought in on keyboards, then Caravan's melody was introduced, and so on, until it just sounded like cacophony. I can't tell you what other tunes they played. Just can't summon anything else at the moment. But I will tell you, it was one of my biggest musical thrills, ever.

2. The Beatles, Aug '66 Candlestick Park, SF. CA
I need more on this one! I was going to turn 13 in September. This was my birthday gift. My dad was slick - a real schmoozer. He knew a ticket broker in Sacramento and managed to snag two tickets. 2nd row seats behind the 3rd bass dugout. I brought along my best friend, Jimmy Brummer. So, we get to the stadium, my dad tells us where to meet him after the show and he drives off. I faintly remember the Cyrkle. I remember Bobby Hebb singing Sunny. When the Beatles were announced and ran to the stage, you could see the top rows of the stadium emptying out, kids moving down toward the lower rows as far as they could go. And the screaming! It was nuts. A few kids made it onto the field; the security dudes took 'em down and led them off. Amazingly, when they started to play I could hear them! All of the screaming was behind me. They sounded amazing to me. I'm sure there was some sloppiness, there, but I think with all the adrenaline rushing through me, it must have made things sound perfect. As they started Paperback Writer, I wondered if they were going to be able to duplicate that crazy echo effect that was on the record. I'd have to look at the setlist to remember more details. I had just started playing guitar earlier that summer, I remember trying to figure out how George played certain songs. So, after the concert, he asked how we liked it. We gushed, of course. I asked him what he did. He said he went to a lounge to see Bobby Freeman. It's only recently that I put two and two together. It's likely that the venue he went to was the topless bar, The Condor, where Carol Doda and Bobby Freeman had a long running gig.

I'm not a Beatles' scholar, so I ask...At that time, was there any inkling that The Beatles were stopping touring and more specifically, that the Candlestick Park concert would be their last?

Do you have the ticket stub? My brother in California has them both. For years I thought they were gone.
