Today is opening day! The Reds might actually have a winning record this year, so I'm pretty excited. Uh, nevermind. Well, it's early. I remember in 1993, the Oriole stumbled out of the gate, but after a 20 minute brawl with the Seattle Mariners in June, they caught fire and played great baseball all summer (unfortunately, the great baseball they played in June, July, and August couldn't overcome the mediocre baseball they played in April and September, and they finished third). I still fully expect my Orioles to lose 90-100 games, but right now, they're a surprising 5-5, and are playing an exciting brand of baseball.

Just want to chime in that it's annoying to NOT be a baseball fan this summer: here the Twins are leading in the Central by a mile and among the top teams in the league, and I'm more or less clueless, not having followed them since roughly '91!
Why can't the teams I like (Vikings, Wolves, and Gophers football and basketball) do better? But no, it's usually Gophers hockey, the Lynx, and now the Twins!?

The Major League All Star Game was on last night. There was a time, not long ago, when the ASG was one of my favorite nights of the summer, but I probably haven't watched it in three or four years. I tend to find the modern game boring, and I'm now at a point where I don't even recognize the names of half the rosters.

I tend to find the modern game boring, and I'm now at a point where I don't even recognize the names of half the rosters. I tuned into the Home Run Hitting Contest on Monday night and hardly even heard of any of the participants. Then I tuned into the All Star Game last night for a few minutes and...same thing.
I can't believe I reached this state of non-fandom. I played little league and high school baseball, and there was a time I would read the daily newspaper and go to the sports section and read EVERY box score. I could pretty much tell you the starting lineups of every major league team. But, gradually, year after year, my interest in Major League baseball began to fade, until I was only watching Phillies' games. Now, I have a hard time sitting through an entire Phillies' game. I have to struggle to tell you who won the World Series last year!
Sorry for the depressing post, but I still ask myself what happened to my love of Major League baseball. There's undoubtedly a few reasons - the game changed, expansion, other things to do, etc. - and I wonder if my interest will ever return.

I'm in the same boat. I used to live and breathe baseball. I still support my Orioles, but the baby really decreased my viewership (which is OK since we're playing historically bad baseball as we begin an extensive rebuild). But, I've not watched a non Orioles game in full since 2011. I find the current game, with the all or nothing offensive approach to be dull. The lack of true ace pitchers is also a turn off to me. The game just isn't that compelling to me any more.
I think I'll find myself watching the Orioles more in the coming years as my son gets older, but I doubt I'll ever be the big baseball fan I once was.

While I was never that big a baseball fan—really just through that Twins golden era of 1987-91–I totally relate to the sentiments overall related to sports.

I still find the NFL compelling, but NFL football requires fall less commitment than baseball, considering the season is shorter than any other major sport and there are far less games.

Yeah I don’t mean to overstate it. I do still watch most Vikings, some Wolves, and Gophers football and basketball. But my degree of commitment is definitely down.

I still watch my share of football (albeit less now since the baby arrived), but I don't get nearly as emotionally vested as I used to. Although, baseball has been my biggest decline in commitment over the years. If not for my rooting interest in the Orioles, my fandom might actually cease. And with the lease with the city expiring in a few years, and the team struggling with possible financial issues and a change in ownership, that day could conceivably happen.

A few years ago I joined a Fantasy Football League, nothing big, just a small family & friends one. And it's amazing how that rejuvenated my interest in the NFL. I was starting to head down the same path as Major League Baseball, just watching Philadelphia Eagles' games. But since joining this fantasy league, I'm now familiar with several NFL players and teams that I would not have followed otherwise. And even more amazing is that I'll actually sit and watch non-Philadelphia games, just because I have a rooting in even a single player. I'll stay up and watch Thursday or Sunday night games, and I'm not kidding, I sit there and get all wound up and pull for players that I have no interest in, other than them being on my fantasy roster.
I'm sometimes tempted to join a baseball fantasy league so that it would do the same thing as the football fantasy league did - renew my interest in the sport.

To each their own, but I have no interest in going down that rabbit hole. For eleven years in Baltimore, all you heard were fantasy football guys talking about how Joe Flacco was trash because he didn't put up good fantasy numbers. Plus, I just don't have the time to devote to picking players, defenses, etc. And if I don't have the time to do that in football, I'm definitely not doing that for baseball.

I was a big fantasy guy from junior high through my early to mid 20s. It definitely helped in keeping that focus. But especially once online versions with automated scoring came around, I actually lost interest even as they became WAY more popular. (I’ve begun noticing attractive single women at work who play fantasy, and thus watch, football! Where was that when I was 18!?!?)
But I think I lost interest for the same reason kds seems to be saying: the obsession with fantasy led to non-fans becoming “fans,” but not seeming to even understand, much less like, the sports.
Obviously that’s not the fantasy leagues’ fault, and lots of fantasy players are knowledgeable. But that mistaking of stats/points for good quality play drives me nuts.
