Eddie Money reportedly has died. Sad news. I'd recently read that he learned about his cancer last year, but couldn't get treatment due to his heart condition. A great friend of MTV, classic rock radio, and DJs. It's a shame he got esophageal cancer after years of struggling with - and overcoming - drug and alcohol problems.

That's sad. He was found dead in bed. I didn't realize he was 75 years old. He was in the news last year after divorcing from his wife of almost thirty years, Paulina Porizkova. My fondest memories of The Cars are from MTV videos and the radio. R.I.P. Ric...

I’ve now seen him reported as 70 and 75. NYT. Says “it is unclear what age Mr. Ocasek was.”
While no cause of death seems to be reported yet, at least one RIP tweet I saw quoted in a story included the hashtag “#suicide.”
EDIT: the hashtag was apparently a reference to his production work for the band Suicide.

The Ocasek family released a statement on The Cars Facebook page saying that Ric was home recuperating from surgery, went to sleep Saturday night, and never woke up.

At least it was seemingly a peaceful passing for him. Tough on the family, no doubt, but it sounds like he didn’t suffer.

Ric Ocasek died from heart disease per an autopsy. I heard a lot of great Cars' music on the radio today while driving around. Made me feel sad. And old.

The Cars were one of those bands I'd really been taking for granted recently. But, I've been listening over the last couple days, and I forgot how many great songs they released in a relatively small catalog. This might not be the right thread here, but I'm also surprised it took them so long to get into the RNRHOF, considering their music seemed to appeal to the cool / hip kids as much as it did to the lovers of arena rock.

And then second, regarding his age: it seems he was indeed 75, and that it's most likely he just tried to shave off a few years, per NYT.

That's a perfect description of The Cars, which is why I find their 15 year wait for RNRHOF induction a bit baffling.

At least it happened when Ric was still alive.

Maybe their MTV success undermined them with the “intelligensia” in charge.
