I wonder if this is why we haven't heard anymore on the documentary.

Why do you think one would affect the other? The doc, I’m assuming, is done (or at least Brian’s role). Promotional appearances?

There's certainly not a specific time it has to be released, but I figured we would have heard about it coming out sometime this summer.

Do you think Brian would've made promotional appearances to promote the documentary? I could/could've seen him maybe appearing at some movie theater in L.A. for a screening, followed by photos and a short interview, but I don't think he would've done much more than that. I'm not just saying this because of today's statement, but I would not have been surprised if they would've cut back on ANY interviews actually.

I would think so. What other promotion would they do other than promoting it on social media? There are a few big names in it too, I can't imagine them releasing it with little to no fanfare.

Honestly I'm with SJS on it: I don't think BW is particularly good at promoting BW content. Plus he can conceivably still do promotional appearances (e.g., a few well selected interviews) regardless of this issue. It's one thing to tour the country or world while dealing with a health issue, but quite another to talk to a few sympathetic local journalists.

If he did anything, it would probably be a closed interview on video like he did for Fender a few months ago. But it sounds like not much will be forthcoming for a couple more months, anyway.

Yeah, I just don't think it seems like his current issues would necessarily prevent something like that from happening.
But then again, I don't know if we ever had a release date announced for the doc to begin with, did we? So it might not be an issue at all.

Mike posted this on Facebook yesterday:
"Today, I read a message shared by my cousin Brian. My heart is swollen with love, compassion, concern, and thoughtful well wishes for a speedy recovery. Brian, you have fought bravely your battle with mental illness, I have no doubts that you will triumph and move gracefully past this speed bump. Let the music that lives deeply inside you carry you to your highest beautiful self, I will carry you in music every night we perform. I am cheering for you!” I Love You Cuz and I hope and pray to see you soon. Peace & Love Cousin Mike"
Nice sentiment. And one wonders if Kevin Love's advocacy for mental health issues over the past year or so helped soften Mike's approach to the issue. This seems a little more compassionate a response than I'm used to seeing out of Mike. Regardless of the reason, nice note.

I think it's completely different situations that Mike is addressing. In certain interviews, Mike is directly confronted with questions about "his biggest regret with the group's career" and "Brian's and Dennis's drug abuse issues" and Mike's current relationship, or lack of, with Brian. So, you're going to get more of a negative, biting, blaming if you will, response.
This statement from Brian is an entirely different occurence, and one which naturally evokes sympathy and best wishes from Mike. It has nothing to do with The Beach Boys' career, past indiscretions, or Mike "sitting in a room with Brian" and writing music. People (mostly the haters) will act surprised by Mike's response, but Mike has usually expressed his love for his cousin. It's the way Brian has chosen to lead his life, mostly in the distant past, and his current solo career, that Mike has had issues with. Do I wish Mike would mostly/usually lean more on the side of sympathy and less on pointing out past negatives? Yes, of course. But then again, he's just trying to give the interviewer an honest answer, something I wish the other Beach Boys would do/would've done more often.

I could be wrong. Either way, I didn't mean to make it an anti-Mike thing, but rather to note that I liked his statement.

Mike definitely made a nice statement there, and Mike has put out various olive branches over the last couple years.
